Ty PW for the updates. Coming from middlecoin (as many others) I find this thread strangely familiar:
Reason for switching: Wafflepool and others are vastly superior to middlecoin. We have better payout per MH, long live vardiff, we're not as big and we can mine smaller coins, lower rejects, coin visibility, great pool owner updates etc.
A few days mining happily and I get:
1. Lower payout for MH (getting at MC level) 2. F**k H20, he put a fixed diff, he's an idiot etc.... well OF COURSE it's a lower load on the servers so it's a good thing. Someone had to do it first and catch the bullets before it's considered norm. 3. Now that sfire has joined WP (hi btw) we're a big pool and we have to implement an algo for spreading the hash ... kind off what MC has been doing lately. 4. Lower rejects are great but ... well... payout being comparable to others with bigger rejects it's merely a visual thingy. 5. I know what coins we mine. This helps me greatly when I have to explain why we HAVE to mine LTC sometimes and why websites' profit charts sometimes don't paint the whole picture. People always get my explanations and never ask again /s. I guess MC's fog of war over mined coins helped... 6. PW is busy creating profit for us and not having to answer lots of (sometimes stupid, sometimes asked a zillion times) questions. Maybe a twitter account might help? 7 God damn unexchanged/unconfirmed piling up in MC is EVIL. H2O is stealing!. WP doesn't have high unexchanged until it has to manually trade new and exotic coins for which no exchange can help. And the unexchanged will pile up. and PW will steal our coins. Of course he wouldn't, that's H20's thing...
The only thing missing is SimonG (who resurrected on MC thread, I think he has a SMS service tuned in with the level of FUD/despair in MC) and tealover who's retired after Angela kicked his ass. As I said, I feel like home. Maybe my old Hashcows account still works?

Hi!
Can anyone explain what requested work restarts are?
I mostly use old cards like 5850-s in my rigs. I have around 2.5-2.8MH. I tried out middlecoin but my profit was really bad. Since they changed to 1024 diff it was worse. I had lot of work restarts and around 5% rejects.
Then I found waffle with vardiff. Worked like a charm. Around 1% rejected and no restarts. Since diff is changed to 512 I'm getting a lot of restarts again and reject went up to 2,5%. My profit went down.
Anyone can explain why is that?

Going through in order poolwaffle, can you pls explain the issue with workers? as a test I set up 8 workers for my rigs and hash reported dropped to 2mh took away workers and went to normal.
I don't know of any issues with workers like that. Can you email me what you were using for worker names? Perhaps its an invalid character or something? Can anyone explain what requested work restarts are?

Restarts are a normal thing. It means there is new work (compared to the old work you were working on), this could be because there are new transactions we want to include in a block, or we switched coins. You're most likely getting the exact same number of them as before, just that with fewer shares submitted (512 difficulty instead of whatever you were before), you see them more often. They're perfectly normal, and are to be expected. As for the 5% rejects, that seems high, what is the reasons returned for them?

The current profitability is really low on wafflepool, I only made 1,76 euro (US $2.41) per Mh/s per day the last few days after power costs. I'm doing switching myself now with good results, last 24 hours gave me 4,41 euro (US $6.04) per Mh/s... that is two and a half times more then wafflepool!
Something is seriously wrong.

I am just wondering, why unexchanged is starting to pile up?
Is due to making more coins faster now, or it due to something else?

On top of that, I've just enabled ReddCoin, KarmaCoin, and PenguinCoin.
Are you ready for the static bonus values at block 29000 for Karmacoin? They also have a new required wallet. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=447657

Alright guys.
So I've been watching the impact of the bumped (hard-locked) difficulty of 512. From my side, we're looking rediculously better. All around load on servers is down by about 70% due to the adjustment. This is from a few factors, first being we don't need to track every miner, and all of their previous shares (and times) for calculating and readjusting difficulty, second is the reduced amount of shares we have to log into the db (and then process into rounds, etc), third is the reduce in bandwidth required, which allows us more upstream bandwidth for outgoing block propagation.
All of these things combined makes for a _much_ better server-side. From a miner standpoint, I can understand why it is a slight negative (smaller miners don't see shares nearly as often, may think something is broken). But unless there is a major outcry about this, I think we need to stick with it.
The next thing is, we've boosted connectivity (a lot to do with bandwidth changes from difficulty), so we should be seeing fewer network-orphaned blocks, which is extremely good. A bit of that was showing up earlier on the stats pages (from about 0.0080 --> 0.0086).
On top of that, I've just enabled ReddCoin, KarmaCoin, and PenguinCoin. These are the first of their kind, in that we have to manually trade them (they're not on Cryptsy, where we auto-trade), and aren't listed on any exchanges that support API based trading. What that means is two-fold: 1) Unexchanged balances will be significantly higher than normal (they wont move from unexchanged --> converted very often). 2) Unexchanged balance approximation will be off significantly more than it was previously, since we're exposed to market swings between the time they're earned, and the time they're converted (probably 2-3 times daily). But even with the added risk, I think they should be more profitable on average.
Lastly, I've disabled a few more coins for the time being (under 15 difficulty), as when we switch to them, the block propagation time compared to block-find time is way too high, and results in us fighting ourselves for blocks (orphans). As a simple example, say it takes about a full second for any block we find to make it around the world (propagate fully). With coins under 15 difficulty, we have an average block time of about 7 seconds. Meaning that 1/7th of the time, we might have already found a block, and not seen it yet (found at EU, hasn't gotten to USWest). And we end up orphaning our own blocks about 1/7th of the time.
The long-term solution to this was discussed previously, which is to switch portions of our hashrate to lower difficulty blocks, in an attempt to keep our block-find time at a constant value (ex: never switch more power than would give us 20s block times). But this is a reasonably large change to the profitability switcher, and the easier short-term solution is to just disable those coins until we can make those changes (a few days most likely). So in the mean time we added additional coins (see above).
tldr; added new coins, disabled some coins, don't trust unexchanged balances
For those folks who keep asking poolwaffle questions that were answered two pages back. BTW, thanks for all of your work PW. I was probably the 10th person to join this pool when you first posted on Reddit, and have enjoyed watching the many improvements you have made since then. Also a big thanks to Wil Schrader for creating the Wafflestats page. Great job!

read PW's second to last comment, or my previous post. New coins/no auto exchange/ manual trading at specific times ==> Large unexchanged.

I had a thought, the difficulty setting in the password.
If you wrote a short scale for where to set it to, if you say server load drops with the preset (or am 100% wrong?)
Then maybe make some guide lines.
Eg. Below 500mh/s = d=xx 500 to 1500mh/s = d=xxx
Am i making sense?
I know myself, and many others have no idea what difficulty to set, and just go for the auto. (Am running 512 per your request)

Difficulty is now hard coded at 512 (so it doesn;t matter what you set in your miner). As it has been explained many times, difficulty by itself will not change your earnings in the long term. You will get less shares but each will be worth more so it's virtually the same. It only matters for short term because luck/variance play their part and it might seem inconsistent. Just let it settle and choose a longer time frame (24h+) to see that the results are the same. the 512 diff will probably be forced forever (may I suggest 1024? ) so it doesn;t matter anymore but here are some old guidelines: <250KH: 16 250+: 32 500+: 64 1000+: 128 2000+: 256 3000+: 384 4000+: 512

It is by default hardcoded to 512, however, if you send d=1024, you'll still get 1024 Very few people were using it, so it slipped my mind!

The problem I have with 512 diff is that my internet connection is not stable enough for my 280MH when using my pc and 420MH when away
I need about 2 minutes to work on a 512 diff, but if my internet is not stable I loose those shares in the ashes.

When using vardiff its OK because I did not loose that much high rate shares. So the variance for me is not balanced with the time, but its going down with the time. I got random disconnects and will lose high value shares. I cant fix my internet connection as the whole family is using the Internet, and also the ISP provider is kinda sucky.

Yet again, this isn't true. If you lost 1% of your shares originally due to disconnects, you'll again lose 1% of your shares at 512 difficulty.

Hi All,
I just joined Wafflepool yesterday. But until now, I can't see my hashrate display on miners stats page. I have 6Mhs in total. My 3 workers report accepting shares and finding new blocks but I can't see anything on Wafflepool.
All I see are these since yesterday and now. My hash: 9343cd7e. Could somebody help to explain to me?

Go into your router at home and look for qos settings. Try prioritizing port 3333 (tcp). At least your upload will get there. Download u dont control.
