An ICO is a project that creates a certain amount of a digital token and sells it to the public, usually in exchange for bitcoin or ether. But of course something like this come with risks. A sell-off could affect the token price and the viability of the project and there is no guarantee the project will get developed
Is it possible or even safe to to invest in a project that does not partake in an ICO? I'm worried about the risks ICOs present.

It seems it is quite possible! There is a new project, Bitcoin Origin, that I have been looking into. They are self funded and there is no ICO.
https://www.bitcoinorigin.io/ It seems like something worth looking into.

ICO is a fundraising effort to build applications related to Blockchain and its implementations such as cryptocurrency, bitcoin, smart contract and smart ledger. ICO offers a number of tokens to investors that are usually valued by Cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin.

Those who earn online, they know less about the coin. After a storm in the world, Bitcoin is getting new coins after a storm and most of the coins are making fewer storms. Before the coins come to the market, the precedes or the fundraises. Then coins were given at very low prices. It is called the ICO (Initial Coin Offer). Those who buy coins at the time are very beneficial when they come to the exchanges.

BitConnect was worth 13 cents in January this year. Now it's worth 300 dollars. How many changes did it last year? At that time, buying the BitConnect for $ 130 would now sell it to $ 300,000. Sorry to say

It was two months ago that Hextra Coin sold 1 dollar to ICO. Two months later, after coming to the exchange, it was worth 30 dollars. Whose $ 100 invested in the investment was $ 3000. A headache

Maybe I'm going through many ways of my nose. Many people are using the opportunity very useful. A lot of foreign currency is being silently silenced.

But there are reasons for fear. Most of the coins coming in the ICO are not feasible but coins that will not sustain in the market or by which you will not be able to benefit. So to get benefit from ICO, you have to keep a lot of news about the coin market.

I am new in the world of cryptocurrency can somebody tell me what actually ICO is? I have heard that term many times.

An Initial Coin Offering, also commonly referred to as an ICO, is a fundraising mechanism in which new projects sell their underlying crypto tokens in exchange for bitcoin and ether. It's somewhat similar to an Initial Public Offering ( IPO ) in which investors purchase shares of a company.

It is a chance to obtain coins cheaply.

Or not. Just an opportunity to buy at the price decided by the team but you can not say it is cheap.

Especially on the recent ICO, many tokens dumped just after they were available on exchange.

ICOs are a relatively new phenomenon but have quickly become a dominant topic of discussion within the blockchain

As the name suggests, it is initial coin offering which is similar to the IPO concept in the stock market. The companies who are willing to raise money from the market, offer the coins in the form of initial coin offering offer before introducing it in the market/exchanges. It is the easiest way for the new companies to get capital for the development of the project as per the roadmap.

ICO is the abbreviation of initial coin offering. It means that someone offers investors some units of a new cryptocurrency or crypto-token in exchange against cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Since 2013 ICOs are often used to fund the development of new cryptocurrencies.

It's very easy to understand .
1)Someone publish a project .
2)It still not list in any exchange platform .
3)The dev team or founding team will take out some coins from this project and sell in a cheap price .
4)If you think the price is cheap and it will be more expensive when it's listed on exchange platform , so you can buy it .

If I am right OP is not asking about ICO definition. I think he asking about how work ICO and for what ICO.
ICO is the most famous fund raising platform. An developer team create a token and distribute token by website. They collect found for their existing or upcoming project. Then they list an external exchange for trade. If not listed external exchange that means they are scamed.

Many companies who have ideas and know how to implement it but dont have money to initiate so they use initial coin offering system. in other words, they offer you their share for money and in return you get the share and you believe that they will make a working product with your given money.

ICO stands for "Initial Coin Offering", an ICO established by a group or company. Having the idea to help the community, it is necessary to raise funds for the successful implementation of the project. Investors support the company by purchasing tokens using BTC, ETH or other Crypto.

If there's been one word on the lips of everyone in finance this past year, it's cryptocurrency. If you've been kicking yourself for not getting in on the ground floor of blockbuster coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum, you might want to consider looking into investing in an Initial Coin Offering (ICO). Be warned, however: ICOs are highly risky even under the best of circumstances, and have a high potential for scams.
