I believe it is technically possible to port the controller firmware to (compilable) software.

However, I'm afraid that it hasn't been done so far by LightningAsic and selling individual 5-chip units w/o controller was a bad idea in the first place. Probably due to bad communication between LA and resellers/customers. I sincerely hope I'm wrong about this.

Assuming this is confirmed:

Now I would be more interested to put pressure on LA to have them code that piece of software than going through a refund process. As far as I'm concerned I don't hold Beastlymac responsible for this, as I make a difference between a community group buy and a commercial reseller.

@Beastlymac: However, I would appreciate if you could support us buyers as much as you can to get that missing piece of software coded ASAP. Seems fair enough, right?

@other buyers, please report your success if any, that would prove me wrong... thanks!
No one with 10+ order got even shipped yet. I don't think you will get any report.
It has been too long. please start shipping.

Matt I haven't had issues setting up cpuminer. I will be recording setup video tomorrow but for now follow all the information from the guide on diffpair.com/lightningasic except use the driver I have in the support thread and don't worry about flashing the device with updated firmware. I have tested cpuminer and have t running fine on up to 3 units after that cpuminer can not handle anymore devices and that is why they are working on a modified version of cgminer.

Message me if you have any problems

If you got the silver 5-chip working with cpuminer, then there must be something wrong on my side, so this is actually good news (not so good for me if than means that my unit is DOA, but good for other miners).

I will try to upgrade the firmware first (I guess there is a link to the FW and flasher linked from LA's guide). I have tried 2 different VMs but the physical host and port were the same. I will try on another machine with 'native' Windows 7, hopefully my problems are due to timing problems with the USB emulation in the VM. I will try tonight (CET) and let you know about my results.

The silver units DONT need a firmware update on a side note. Plug the device power in first before data so the device isn't pulling power from the USB port and under powering itself. That might be causing you the issues.

Thanks for your help. I found the problem. The mini-USB end of the USB cable that was supplied with my unit was just slightly too big to properly fit into the hole through the heatsink. Because it was the "original" cable that was supplied with it, I naively thought that just pushing it firmly into the hole was going to work, even though it skewed the connector a bit. But actually, it didn't. I highly suspect that weak/bad contacts made the data lines too noisy for working Tx/Rx.

When I had tested with another cable with a smaller mini-B connector, I wasn't using the ATX hi-power supply but a lower grade one, because I thought that 7 watts was the rated power for the whole device, and not for a single chip (see OP). The actual power draw at wall is indeed close to 5x7 = 35W. I suppose that the solid red LED had that meaning (something like "I got underpowered, so I stopped working").

So I'm sorry for having raised unnecessary concerns here, it seems that all is well after all.

The lessons to be learned IMHO:

  • If you get a mini-USB connector that doesn't quite fit into the hole of the heatsink, use another cable with a slimmer connector, and don't try to force it into the hole like I did
  • Do not underestimate the power requirements like I did. OP mentions 7W as power spec for scrypt-only mode 5 chip unit, but it is actually 7W per chip, i.e. 35W

And for those who wonder, during normal operation, status of the LEDs is the following for my unit:

  • Green LED blinking at regular 1 second interval
  • Red LED turning on/off at slower, irregular intervals, typically between 3-5 sec

At 600 MHz frequency, measured 10-min avg hashrate on pool side is around 300 khs as expected.

So, I'm sorry for having raised unnecessary concerns here, it seems that all is well after all.

okay assuming matt4054 is correct.

I was wrong. No controller needed, just that 3 units max. restriction as stated by Beastlymac. I haven't tried more than 3 units myself as I had only ordered one to "play with".

you only bought 1 and lucky to have one actually. BestlyMac/asiabtc is holding up on the big orders ( 10+ units ). Any ETA from AsiaBTC for 10+ orders yet OP?

Any more <10 orders arrived? It's now been nearly 2 weeks since your original estimated ship date.

You jump into conclusions very fast. One chip draws about 1.5W, the 5 chip unit draws 7W total (in scrypt mode). The miner software you are using probably activated sha256 which draws the extra power. So you probably configured something wrong.
