Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

There's a freshy start with Paypal-BitCoin market which I'm a technical support of - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=44031.0. However, you'd need someone to invite you there in order to bail you're a trustworth and honest trader.
