Moving Bitcoin wallet and all contents permenently to external HDD?

Hi

This may be a stupid question, currently looking at the Bitcoin folder in windows that stores everything, its just under 1GB

Users>Me>AppData>Roaming>Bitcoin

Can I simply click on the Bitcoin wallet, select "cut" and then paste it into my external HDD and not store it on my laptop?

is this possible?

Will I be able to just plug in my external HDD, open up the bitcoin and it will be able to connect and receive/send BTC as easy as that?

I ask because I'm getting several hundred dollars worth of BTC soon and a little paranoid about keeping it on here.

So I thought I could backup to an external HDD + a memory stick

just 2 questions

1. When I have bitcoins in my wallet, transfered from the website I bought them from, are they physically IN that wallet? and if I copy that to an external HDD will they now be stored there?
2. is there any reason not having a bitcoin wallet on your desktop and only storing it on an external HDD is a bad idea?

Oh sorry last thing

do I really need to encrypt my wallet on the external HDD?

It will sit in my bedroom, no other human being literally has touched it since I bought it years ago, and there's no reason anybody would any time soon.

I would encrypt my memory stick if I still took it with me to college, but apart from that I see no other reason to.


And lastly (lol)

Would it be a better idea, for me to create a NEW wallet on my external HDD

that way, it will have never touched my normal HDD, I'm thinking even if I delete it from my HDD (laptop hdd) and move it to external, at SOME point or somewhere on my machine was the memory of it existing

then they could gain access and intercept incoming/outcoming payments?..

For full security, I would transfer the coins into a new wallet in a hidden truecrypt partition on the external drive and then secure the drive. Then you'll be safe even if the drive is physcially compromised

and putting the physical thing aside, I.e. another person stealing with his hands my portable HDD, is there a need to encrypt?

Lol, where I live, even if it got stolen, the people and petty criminals around me are far to dipshit stupid to understand what bitcoins are or how to steal them, plus the external HDD will be stored in a steel safe
