Wouldn't Zerocoin be at risk at getting totally banned in the US. From the last New York hearings they seemed to keep stressing how they hate fully anonymous coins and tumblers, but gave bitcoin benefit of the doubt because of the public ledger..

It's a decent point, but does it necessarily have a negative impact on price ?

BTC did quite well 0-$1200 with mainly the Chinese and Ukranians providing the price discovery. Not much US involvement there.

That said, regulation will legitimise the arena and acceptance - still, anonymity may have its niche ... and perhaps there wont be such a proliferation of copycats.

Litecoin may be your safest bet. But maybe gamble on a few of the cheaper alts like Feathercoin, Worldcoin and Mega.

Not if you invest early. Like within the first week or two within a coin joining an exchange. Generally this is when price is lowest (obviously). So, hypothetically speaking you could invest x amount early on and sell for 2-5x roi fairly safely.

You'll be fine. In a month or two you will see where the profit lies. As for ASICs, well, you still have eight months.

You will fail first couple of times if you decide to build a rig, but eventually you will make some money. When you do make some money, you will start to seriously consider mid-/long- term investing. If you are capable to make some money in this jungle, you will bust your ass trying to keep it or make some more. You'll learn, like anyone else here.
That's the best way. Better than ask for an advice from day traders.

 

You could buy a ready built rig off ebay for that if you dont have the knowledge or want to get up and running quickly.  Only to mne alt cons though. Btc is only for asics now and big companies.

I'd suggest Anoncoin. An anonymous coin is important for free speech, and even if it gets banned, it will still survive on Tor, so it's one of the few altcoin that I believe has a future.

Anyway, I would do this:

$0 in BTC its already made its run there is no making money there, it will swing forever, boring, like a savings account.
$500 in LTC because its currently low around 0.26 until it hits 0.33BTC then sell and get out.
$500 in NET because its one of the few prestigeous coins with no premine, no instamine and very little promotion
$400 in MOON @ 10 then sell at 15, this is a short term play.
$300 in FAST only because it has dropped lately to around 1100, and get out when you make 50%

I disagree. I think BTC will be the best bet just based on mainstream adoption. Doubt a lot of these other alts will amount to much if you can't buy anything with them.

I'd put it into Bitcoin, gold and silver (the real stuff not shit ETFs or other derivatives). If the $1700 is just extra money you can afford to miss with ease you could dabble in some altcoins. But no-one knows which altcoins have lasting value beyond a few months let alone a year or more. Most will crash to 0 eventually. They are nice to speculate with in the short term though.

@OP some of the suggestions here are absolutely horrible. Zerocoin was looking like an amazing project, but many new projects have pretty much made it useless. And don't get me started on MOON, FAST, SXC...

What is your risk tolerance?

IMO safest portfolio = 40% BTC, 30% LTC, 30% PPC
Balanced risk and safety portfolio = 30% BTC, 20% LTC, 25% PPC, 25% QRK

I think of BTC and LTC as standards. I see potential for PPC although not extremely rapid or large gains. I see Quark as an all or nothing coin. That thing is either gonna be up 10-30x by the end of the year, or it won't have budged in price.

Great suggestions guys, As I will be living in dorms soon I have decided to still invest some of the is money into a mining rig as well as doubling down on investments in some alts you have mentioned. I have extended my amount  of available funds to $2500.

I can create mining rig of 2x7970 for $1200(or $1320 for 2x280x). The only problem it will have to be an enclosed rig in a case though. Is it okay temperature wise to do this? 2x 7970 in 1 case? This should provide 1500/hs which hopefully should see some roi in 3 months although it could be a bit iffy depending. Also would the noise by a problem sleeping in the same room?

The rest of my money I will be investing in some alt coins. PPC-40% and WDC-%25 potentially. 20% speculation( maybe some pos coins) I will be moving out of my WDC position at some point in the next few months after some roi. So far thats all I've worked out but to be honest Im so open to any ideas you guys have I will be keeping an eye out for some more ideas.
