So what is the hype about block halving all about? Is that supposed to make price rise? I've been mining coins that have halved in the past and all it did was make the diff go down because it was no longer profitable and people stopped mining. Price stayed the same or even fell. I would like to understand this better.

Can do, it's happened either way to me. Part of the unexpected fun that is crypto trading. With any other commodity if you halve the supply then we know what would happen.. but here .. who knows.

I agree, these pump&dump coins, often premined, are totally draining the market of good alts like LOT. It's sad to watch, but on the other hand, it represents a good buying opportunity.
When enough people get burned by these pump&dump schemes, they will get old and eventually die out.

Only good coins will be left, aurora, spain, etc will just die out.

New alts will get more scarce and eventually very few new alts will come into existence.

Then the money will flow back into good and undervalued alts, LOT, DGC, ANC, etc.
All of them are down, all of them will rise again when people have enough of those pump&dump scamcoins.
