Trend Micro recently spoke on the subject of malware being used to turn infected machines into Bitcoin mining bots. Using the recent trend of phishing emails related to Mt. Gox as an example of ways to get to your computer. Those within the communities may know that even Tradehill has been used as ploy for such attacks.
Trend Micro’s research into the subject of Bitcoin gave them this experience, “we encountered a webmaster who reported to us that he received a threat from a cybercriminal, saying that his website will be DoS-ed unless he pays 100 Bitcoins to a certain account.”
In related news, Kaspersky Lab has kept updated on the TDSS rootkits that are being bundled with Bitcoin miners. The rootkits are going down to the master boot record and goes by basically undetected. They do note for the future:
Malware like TDSS is one of the reasons why Microsoft secured the boot process in Windows 8. The new Windows version authenticates all boot components at every reboot, and detection of any unauthorized modification forces the system into the Windows Recovery Environment.
