Awesome. Good luck on getting people to believe that.

Don't need to convince anyone. Icelanders already know they can identify themselves easily online. Check out this nifty app for example: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/04/18/icelandic-anti-incest-app_n_3109628.html

Bitcoin for Microstates: How Iceland could adopt Bitcoin

http://www.slideshare.net/sweyn/btc-london-slides02072013v02final

...

Whilst I'm mostly against pre-mining crypto-currency, in this instance it does make some practicle sense.

There are many reasons why Bitcoin is right for micro-economies and why Bitcoin is also probably unlikely to be fully adopted in a country such as Iceland.

However, if the adoption of Auroracoin in Iceland only reaches a low percentage of the population it will still make for an interesting experiment in crypto-currency and could realistically make for a better currency than the existing one.

...

I'm mining some Auroracoin because I've recently lost some hosting for proxy and privacy related services previously hosted in the EU and I'm looking for a suitable alternative. Hosting in Iceland is high up on my list of alternatives due to having good freedom of speech and privacy laws, eco friendly hosted and renewable energy source data centres and some other factors.

If Auroracoin is a mainstream success in Iceland, then I quite like the idea that I'd be able to pay for hosting services in the future using Auroracoin.

Active regulators

Among those actively regulating digital currencies, according to the report, are Brazil, and China, the latter which stopped financial institutions buying, selling, or pricing services in bitcoin, and from providing bitcoin-related services.
Iceland forbids bitcoin from being traded in foreign exchange.
Thailand was said to have issued a statement saying that bitcoin was illegal, the report suggests, but adds that the ruling was preliminary, and that bitcoin exchanges there are running

He should have known if he had something to do with Iceland  Cheesy

Foreign Exchange is a very specific thing. What is the exact detail of said ruling or legislation exactly ?

There are lots of Icelandic companies that still advertise that they accept Bitcoin - if I'm based outside of Iceland and I purchase goods or services in Iceland is that considered to be a 'foreign exchange' ? Or is this just in relation to financial markets and instruments, for example ? Thus, further investigation is required.

Auroracoin is also not Bitcoin, if the ruling does not directly mention all p2p / crypto-currencies, although this can obviously change public perception.

Still might be worth mining a few thousand of these while the difficulty is low. Long live peer-to-peat.  Cheesy

Iceland does not specifically ban anything to do with cryptos.
Transferring krónur out of the country to any foreign party including exchanges is illegal without permits.

"Due to the capital controls put in place in 2008 to stop money flight on the króna, buying and selling Bitcoin in Iceland, which appears to consider Bitcoin as a foreign currency, is Illegal. The Icelandic Central Bank confirmed "It is prohibited to engage in foreign exchange trading with the electronic currency Bitcoin, according to the Icelandic Foreign Exchange Act.",[15] however commentators suggest bitcoins mined within Iceland could be freely traded."

Anyone else get this problem on Linux (Xubuntu 13.10) when running qmake

Code:
don@don-MS-7792:~/auroracoin-project$ qmake
Project MESSAGE: Building with UPNP support
Project MESSAGE: Building with UPNP supportRemoved plural forms as the target language has less forms.
If this sounds wrong, possibly the target language is not set or recognized.
RCC: Error in 'src/qt/bitcoin.qrc': Cannot find file 'res/images/splash2.jpg'
don@don-MS-7792:~/auroracoin-project$

make fails a long while later with a similar error about splash2.jpg

Great idea, very crazy, good luck!

(iceland is very little, very interconnected and very geeky - so maybe it will work ...)

Is the launch on march, or is it possible to mine before?

I'm interested in this. Everything starts out as an experiment and we always learn something new about crypto when stuff like this happens.
