On September, 8th, I transferred BTC -16.9777 to my Mt. Gox account.
In the bitcoin client, transaction has "Status 0/not confirmed" since.

Here is a link to blockexplorer: http://blockexplorer.com/address/16JxyHP9xpXBVHsihfCpAb9HK9k7SNa2Cu

Can anyone explain how this can happen?
What can I do about it?

Thanks in advance
BD

Leave your client running for a while.  It needs to download more blocks.  Your transaction should start confirming when you reach 145154.

Find the folder that your wallet.dat file is located in (usually C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin) and delete everything except the wallet.dat file, then start Bitcoin. Occasionally if you change out your wallets the block chain will appear to be current but will lock up. Just let it download again and it should work fine.
