I have an old private key for Maxcoin.  I have downloaded the windows wallet for maxcoin, but I am not seeing a way to import the private key easily.  Whats listed on GitHub is either over my head or lacking information.  I am not turning up much info via google.

The wallet uses Qt v 4.8.6 if this helps.

Can someone help me on importing the private key?

You might want to ask for help on the Maxcoin subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/maxcoin/

Unfortunately there's little to no activity on that subreddit for months. But it's probably worth to try.

In addition to what @mjglqw has suggested, you may want to raise your issue here, [ANN][MAX] MAXcoin - PoW, ASIC Resistance, Keccak GPU Mining. You may also give it a try since the thread seems to have some activity from time to time.

I did some more research and this is how you should do it. This instruction is for Bitcoin Core but it should be the same for your wallet, give it a go.
Let us know if this works for you.

Run Bitcoin-Core
Select Help (to the right of Settings)
Select Debug Window
Select Console
If you encrypted your wallet, unlock it by entering walletpassphrase "YourLongPassphrase" 600 next to the > input box
Next to the > input box type importprivkey <bitcoinprivkey> (Note that the private key must not have spaces, remove them if they are included in your backup)
Example: importprivkey 5KJvsngHeMpm884wtkJNzQGaCErckhHJBGFsvd3VyK5qMZXj3hS
