I don't understand how a close on trigger order works. Why would you need to free up margin to close a position (and hence cancel other open orders)?
Can anyone who trades on BitMEX please explain this?

Trigger order is mean your order not yet in order book,  and will be triggered and go to the order book when the price going on STOP order.  In my opinion to make trade much easy on Bitmex is better to use only LIMIT  and
MARKET order for open potition,  and for the stop loss and trailing  stop use STOP MARKET function,  and for take profit use TAKE PROFIT LIMIT function.

Trigger order is very usefull in crypto trading activity, we can use this trigger order as stop loss and also to set as buy stop / buy at higher price to confirm the trend of price will going up. Compared others exchange Bitmex offer full function of trigger order, trigger order is mean the price will be filled when the price go to the trigger price.
