Monthly update.

997K merits are already sent. There are 3 thousand merit left to reach the one million mark.

I also published stats for September 2021. El duderino_ is the leader of this TOP-200. Ratimov is rated second (for the fourth time in a row). hugeblack took third position. Cool

1 of 14 members has not yet crossed his/her "Generosity" threshold to be detected as a newly appointed merit source. Roll Eyes

Finally, my detection algorithm has spotted the last of the recently appointed merit sources. This is LeGaulois who is active on the French local board.

Maybe you want me to merit you again so you it will be more difficult for you to be #1?? Grin [/joke]

Of course, sent. De-trone fillippone is inevitable. Grin Grin Grin

If a merit source sends sMerits to another merit source exactly in the end of the month, the "Generosity" index of the first one increases but the "Generosity" index of the second one decreases because he is late in distributing the sMerits earned recently on time. So this "Dethrone" game can be quite a tricky strategy. Wink

I will never take the first position, no matter how much merit I distribute. Cheesy
And I don't think I'll get above #6 unless some merit sources above me drop out.  I'm not even sure I can maintain #6 on a monthly basis, as it's not easy to distribute that many merits consistently.  I'm glad some members have taken me up on my offer of monthly post history reviews and that the "Ranking up" thread exists in Meta.  If I had to rely on finding good posts all by myself, I don't think I could give out 600-800 merits monthly.

Thanks again for posting the results, OP!

This problem is solved by expanding your merit distribution area (if you have time, of course). If I distributed merit within my locale, as it was before, then I could hardly distribute even 700 merit, not to mention 1200. Therefore, I began to expand my allocation to different locales and sections of the forum. But you need to devote a lot of time to this, this is a fact. I recently discovered that in a Turkish locale (the largest locale after Russian), merit sources only give out 700 merit a month. Of course, posts in Turkish can become a serious obstacle to understanding, but in principle, using auxiliary tools, it will be possible to understand what it is about and support active users of merit.

For sure, each of us are going to have our differing methodologies, and maybe if some of us have been sending smerits over a longer period of time, the drasticness of the changes that we have to make is not as great.

Before I was a merit source, I hardly ever ventured outside of the WO thread, so I suppose that becoming a merit source has caused me to explore more threads and topics than I would have otherwise done, even though I did not really attempt to make any kind of conscious effort of spending more time or causing myself to work more..,... but still like The Pharmacist said there is inevitably a certain amount of additional work that comes from having a lot of smerits to send out.

So sure, sometimes some of us might decide to send more smerits per post than we otherwise would have sent, and within that category would also be to decide to send smerits to some posts that we might not have previously considered high enough within our considerations of what is smerit worthy.....

So, what is a value-add post, and sometimes I am not really sure if some posts are value add or not, especially some of the more technical of posts that I will sometimes merit.. and surely there are some topics that I have trouble in determining how many smerits to send because I am not sure if I understand the posting content sufficiently.. and there are other kinds of posts that I surely do not agree with the points being made, but I may well still send out smerits if I believe them to add value or to be well-presented (even if I disagree with some of the points being made).

Another trick might be to attempt to skim rather than read in detail, but sometimes if I might be attempting to determine how many smerits to give, then I might have to read the post in more detail, even though the skimming practice might have allowed me to come across a post that I would not have otherwise even bothered to look at.

By the way, my own style is to type somewhat long posts (and sometimes detailed too), so frequently typing posts will take more of my time than reading through posts, yet I feel that many times typing posts help me to engage with various bitcoin related topics way better than if I were not in the habit of typing posts, and in that regard, I feel that I am in a better position to understand what I am reading when I am more actively engaging in various topics (mostly bitcoin related) from time to time.

By the way, I noticed that the excitement around the dispatch of the merit is somewhat subdued. When the long-awaited merit correction was made, many sources rushed to send their merites, sometimes I even saw 50 merites sent at once in one post. Every month the sources seem to understand that the amount of merit that theymos gave them ... they don't know what to do with it, so every month the number of users who sent more than 1000 merit per month is decreasing:

1 month after correction:

User nameSent meritsReceived meritsGenerosity
1)fillippone1340 (in 384 txns to 137 users)428 (in 192 txns from 74 users)1126 (max 1126)
2)Ratimov1282 (in 793 txns to 373 users)345 (in 206 txns from 102 users)1109 (max 1110)
3)hugeblack1131 (in 271 txns to 150 users)78 (in 39 txns from 27 users)1092 (max 1092)
4)Welsh1104 (in 193 txns to 104 users)114 (in 63 txns from 37 users)1047 (max 1049)
5)ETFbitcoin1116 (in 589 txns to 233 users)155 (in 56 txns from 40 users)1038 (max 1039)

2 month after correction:

User nameSent meritsReceived meritsGenerosity
1)ETFbitcoin1035 (in 613 txns to 213 users)67 (in 45 txns from 28 users)1001 (max 1001)
2)Ratimov1273 (in 917 txns to 344 users)546 (in 311 txns from 125 users)1000 (max 1000)
3)fillippone1117 (in 352 txns to 113 users)293 (in 179 txns from 50 users)970 (max 970)
4)El duderino_1070 (in 266 txns to 91 users)274 (in 186 txns from 48 users)933 (max 935)

3 month after correction:

User nameSent meritsReceived meritsGenerosity
1)El duderino_1236 (in 229 txns to 91 users)374 (in 202 txns from 56 users)1049 (max 1051)
2)Ratimov1138 (in 765 txns to 230 users)278 (in 173 txns from 82 users)999 (max 1000)

It is especially difficult for those who used to distribute 200-300, but now a whole 1000 is available. Here, either increase the average amount per post or spend more time looking for posts in other sections. I think that in the future this trend will continue and each merit source will stop at a value that is comfortable for him, which he is able to adequately distribute.

I doubt that you are making any kind of grand revelation, Ratimov.

It seems that there is a wee bit of a pattern that involves a kind of explosion in the amount of smerits that are sent at the time that theymos makes an increase to the smerit allocations of merit sources, and with the passage of time, the amount tappers off...

In other words, nothing to see here in the sense that the same pattern has been known since the first introduction of the smerit system and each time that theymos has made an adjustment (seems to have been an increase in the smerit allocations) each time... How many has he done?  Maybe 3-4 adjustments after the initial creation of the merit system?

Indeed this effect is probably well know by @theymos who probably took that in consideration when readjusting merits in the last merit brrr reallocation.

This problem is solved by expanding your merit distribution area (if you have time, of course).
And that's a big part of the problem--I don't have the time to go scanning a wide array of sections searching for good posts.  I just don't have the time or even the interest to read threads in certain sections--and since I don't speak more than one language, all the local boards are ruled out.

I'm glad I'm able to distribute as many merits as I do, and I wish more members would hit me up when I offer to do post history reviews, because I encourage that.

Here, either increase the average amount per post or spend more time looking for posts in other sections. I think that in the future this trend will continue and each merit source will stop at a value that is comfortable for him, which he is able to adequately distribute.
Giving more merits per post isn't a bad strategy at all, IMO.  That's something I couldn't do before my sMerit allocation got upped, because I'd easily run out if I gave more than 3 merits for a decent post.

Can you open your topic with the distribution of merit? Something like The Pharmacist Merit Giveaway. And there users will drop posts to your best links or something like that.
I thought about doing that recently, and perhaps I should.  I haven't seen a merit giveaway thread in a long, long time, and the last one was by actmyname if I'm not mistaken.  The only issue I have is that the members who post in them don't read the requirements, don't understand that I wouldn't just be giving merit away for shitposts, and that if I created such a thread it would just die off like the other ones have.  I suppose I could keep bumping it, but I think I've made the offer enough times that anyone who thinks their posts would hold up to my standards would have PMed me by now.

But I'll consider it.

Edit:

Unfortunately this is the case. Many people, when submitting applications, only look at the title of the topic and .... there is nothing else. When creating such a topic, I would strongly recommend making a self-moderated topic, otherwise the thread can quickly drown in the flow of off-top and posts that do not correspond to the rules of your distribution.
Right, and I think those merit giveaway threads were all in Meta, where you can't create self moderated threads.  I can't think of another section where a thread like that would be appropriate, but if any of the mods have suggestions I'd be happy to listen, because I agree that a merit giveaway should be in a self-modded thread.

It seems to me that this is not such a good idea as it might seem at first glance, I would rather see your name in the thread that everyone is used to, ([self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source). The only thing ... is that Loyce could modernize the thread, say by adding the names of those who are ready to accept PM from users looking for m'sources who can view the history of messages, (in this case, you simply will not need to repeat yourself over and over again).

I think Beginners & Help won't be a bad place for such like what Nutidah did with The Bitcointalk Urban Achievers Merit Scholarship Program. Though that thread seems to have been abandoned now.

You are already merit showering the users who have good post quality and came into your eyes and i am one of them and still you have the generous offer of PM which members can avail to have a post history check and if you find it suitable you are generous enough to merit them upto the limit of 50 in a month.Like recently you merit shower @Mpamegbu, @icopress,@showoff and some others also which is quite good.

Opening a merit giveaway thread will have certain limitations like you said bumping them as members don't take full advantage of such threads and keep on repeating and making threads like how to earn merits and all that. But still you could open a thread for helping users to achieve certain ranks like of @Ratimov but for me your current merit criteria sounds better.

I have been running such a self-moderated thread for a long time in Beginners & Help. I think it was the only one that wasn't moved to off-topic a few years ago when the admins moved the majority of them. The reason for that as theymos once said is due to the rules and requirements I had. All those concerns you have about the newbies not reading the requirements and understanding what is required of them are true.

I stopped bumping my thread a long time ago because I realized it was pointless for two reasons:

1. Genuine newbies don't have problems getting merits. They don't need my thread for that.
2. Cheaters will find easier ways to get merits. Reading my OP with all the rules is too difficult for them.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  There is no such thing as "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

Don't worry Ratimov. I will re-gain my place next month! A little bit of IRL stuff prevented me from fully eroding my stash. Next month (this month, Uptober) will be hyge.

The forum is waiting for your merit feat. What position in the ranking do you expect this or next month? Ffirst? We'll have to fight.  Tongue

Aiming for the first position.
We have seen the algorithm is quite weird in his output, so never say never.

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
Here is a link and proof that the thread did happen Tongue
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5085605.0

It was meant to be only for Newbies and Jr. Members. I expected much more activity in it, but it died out after a while. If you go through the applications, you will notice how many times I had to reject certain members because they aren't capable of reading and understanding what is requested of them.

I was surprised to learn that the thread was started in 2018 and has only had 12 successful participants to date, and that compared to the other merits to Newbies/Jr.members threads, yours has the least amount of activity. I believe your rules killed the thread; why would any Newbies/Jr.members go through such rules for only 1 merit/post & 3 posts max. When they could create encryption and sign a message in the Ognasty thread in fewer than 24 hours, they would receive a total of 6 merits. Either the rules are not friendly enough, or the offer is too poor.

Yeah, it's the rules thing. Too many requirements, but also the fact that many didn't have anything good to share to begin with. But the rules are the reason it was allowed to remain. I think Ognasty's offers came later, and they weren't around at the time I started my thread.

But your rules at least made newbies try hard, and not create many alternative accounts. In other threads, I see that newbies from the first post go and sign messages, create topics with guides according to forum rules, encrypt messages. In your opinion, are they also newbies?

I believe that the topic is somewhat misnamed.
Generous givers are those who are not a source of merit. Since the distribution of merits is their responsibility, and if you carefully read the reviews, the merit sources sometimes wonder who to distribute their due merits for the distribution.
And of course, you can give merits out even to newbies participating in the bounty, so that you can be called a generous donor in the future. Smiley

You are a merits source, and it would be nice to soften the rules a little to accommodate and carry along as many good members as possible, and besides, Newbies and Jr members only require 1 merit (these are the two easier ranks, getting 1 merit is very easy, and they do not need any merit giveaway thread), I would suggest you focus more on Members ranks, but at the end of the day it is your decision.  Smiley

I believe that the topic is somewhat misnamed.
Agreed.

And it was for this reason that merits sources were chosen to be the generous giver, but this is no longer the case. Even though source merits were enhanced a few months ago by theymos, there has been a significant fall in merit distributions and ranking up in the last few months (still working on the data). Do you have any idea why the forum has such a low number of merits?
