Signature campaigns

Update: (July 1, 2018)

Many thanks to all for fixing errors in the thread.
Special thanks xtraelv for the links

The first mention of the signature campaign:

Signature campaigns started much earlier.

March 10, 2011 [POST]First Signature Advertising Auction
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4342.0

June 12, 2011,[BCT] First signature campaign.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=15886.0

One of the oldest and longest The first mention of the  signature campaign started on September 10, 2013. And only the Bitcointalk staff could participate in it. Payment was small.

PrimeDice was only limited to Staff at the end of the campaign when it was winding down. At first it was open to everyone. I don't believe they were the first either, but probably the one who popularised it and was certainly one of the longest running. They were also the first campaign I saw on the forum and also joined.

[PrimeDice] (Staff Only) Earn Bitcoins Simply By Posting

Staff member - 0.0013BTC Per constructive post

Lower members no longer allowed

Russian thread about the bounty started on June 9, 2015. You can see below the first message (post #16) about campaigns in the thread.

But on the English board, the same thread was created on May 19, 2014.

Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 24-Apr-2018]

The first signature campaign in this thread:

Minersource.net ALL DONE

The conditions were simple:

Quote

You get paid 30 days after signing up, see following posts for People/Start date.

Requirements:
Full Member status or higher
Not a scammer (you must have positive trust)
Minimum 50 existing posts.

The second topic:

Luckyb.it = SELL YOUR SIGNATURE = up to 0.1 BTC A MONTH = Enrollment closed

Payment was also small

Quote
We are paying for your signature space, advertise and earn some bitcoins!
If you are a Member, Full Member, Senior or Hero Member and want some coins then check this out!
Our offer:
Up to 0.1BTC per month for posting with our signature.
Currently the offer is limited to:

Maximum of 40 full members/members @ 0.05 each!!

How to join:
1. Put the code below in your profile signature, you are not allowed to have other signatures.
2. Post here with your bitcoin address and forum post count
3. Do not remove your signature or edit your initial post for 30 days
4. Write 50 posts (OR MORE!) THROUGHOUT the month (NOT only at the end..) to claim your bonus!

But then 284 pages of this topic moved to the Archive, since Mitchell (staff) generally wanted to remove this part.
However, these pages were saved in the Archive.

Bounties

It needs to say that in the early years of this forum the definition of "bounty" was somewhat different than it is now. It was a reward in the BTC, that people offered for doing different jobs.
The first topic about the bounty is Bitcoin Security Bounty 07/21/2010

There was a suggestion that it is desirable: "offer bounty (reward) to security researchers to improve the security and decentralization of the bitcoins network and software."

But a reward was offered earlier. For example in this message in which the user wanted to receive commercial tools. It is a message from an anonymous user who could write on the forum without registering.

This is great.I offered a bounty in another thread to get merchant tools coded but it seems like you are off and running with this effort.I hope everyone sends some coins in appreciation.  Smiley.

July 21, 2010

One of the first topic about the bounty: Bitcoin Security Bounty

October 19, 2010

Bounty 40 BTC per image Bitcoin GALORE! meme Bounty(40 BTC)

I pledge 20 BTC for whoever submit the funniest bitcoin image with the word "Bitcoin GALORE!" by the end of November.
Extra bonus points for whoever use nekos and cute anime girls.
Afterward, we shall begin posting Bitcoin GALORE picture whenever a breakout occurs.

The moderator of the Russian thread LZ also offered the additional reward:

+20 BTC if it will be original and under Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license.

November 17, 2010

In the thread More forum sections needed? for the first time sounded a proposal from sirius to create a separate section for the bounty campaigns.

Should we have a "Project development" section where you can talk about organization, bounty campaigns, advertising etc.? Any other name ideas? "Workshop" or "Project organization"?

At the moment I have about 5 projects all running at the same time and I just do not have the time to do this part of the BBQcoin project.

Link to the files : https://github.com/overware/BBQCoin
Please do not post the link to the completed Windows QT Client on here but PM me the download link instead.
This is so that myself and the rest of the Dev team and begin beta testing.
The person that provides this will also get a mention on the BBqcoin.org website for you contribution.
A confirmation thread of payment will be created once this work has been completed.
Thanks.

In 2015, the person lost the password from the wallet in which there were 106 BTC. He offered 6 BTC for the help.

Yeah, I thought so, because a few weeks ago I was browsing through some threads from at least 2011 and stumbled across a person offering to rent out his signature space, and the comments on it made it quite clear that this was not yet a thing.  I don't know how I randomly came across that thread, but it was fascinating.

I'm really surprised other forums haven't caught on to this yet--it'd probably wreck any forum that did it in terms of post quality, but I don't think it's common knowledge that bitcointalk is a signature campaign hub.

Possibly hard to find the first signature threads because they would be under a different subtopic.

There is always an advantage in being the first. It would be hard to compete against this forum because it just wouldn't have the history.

It is probably both made the forum more and less successful.  Less successful in the quality of posts (and more moderation work) but more successful in terms of visibility. More users = larger pool of good post as well but just harder to find.

The primedice campaign would still probably be the longest running campaign.

We are surrounded by legends on this forum. Phenomenal successes and catastrophic failures. Then there are the scams. This forum is a digital museum.

No, absolutely wrong. There were earlier instances in 2011 of people renting out their signatures for btc... I narrowed my search to marketplace section as it was one of the earliest board in this forum. Went to the last page and spent around 3-4 hrs searching for a very old 'Signature space for rent' post. Then I found out a post of member "kiba" offering his sig space for rent for 5 btc. I can't find a post earlier than this which were renting out their signatures. Most probably there were only technical discussions taking place during satoshi period and once he left this virtual world, slowly the forum was occupied with spams and members started to become greedy.

I am sure campaigns like ritzgrandcasino tempted people to become spammers as they paid a maximum of 3k posts per month.  Shocked

I love this part most of all, 3000 max, but please keep them constructive. I'm sure they would  Roll Eyes, and I'm sure every post would have been checked.

Well it's definitely common enough to the hoards of people coming here with only, the prospect of earning, not learning in mind.

It is funny that in part due to the idea of not monetizing the Forum from an admin standpoint, the members have monetized it on an individual level. (Myself included)

Also I would recommend using the date format I used here. It is consistent with the date format used in the forum. US writes 7/1/2018 UK writes 1/7/2018 so dates  can get confusing in numeric format.
