I've just had a message pop up inviting me to join YouTube premium. It seems that if I pay a monthly fee, then I can suppress all advertising. Does this indicate the end of content monetising on YouTube? I lnow they have been de-monetising a lot of sites, but turning it into a subscription service is surely the beginning of the end for YouTube.

I highly doubt that you got it from YouTube. I would suggest double checking the email address and content writing style. YouTube did not send it, If I am wrong then this will be highly unexpected move. I do not see any email from YouTube for non of my YouTube channels. I have more than one YouTube channel. Do you have the email subject? If then would you mind to pass it to me. I will search for the email in my gmail accounts, in case I am missing it.

I do not think YouTube, Facebook etc will ever think about subscription based business. Data is the main game for these days technology. Information is the biggest business. Only to take your information, big companies like Facebook, Google (YouTube same thing), yahoo everyone - is giving you the free service. They are monetizing your behavior even from the keys you are pressing now on your keyboard. They are spending millions billions to maintain the server and human resources. All they need is your information and all the expenses they are paying from the advertising income which are coming from selling your information to the advertisers. It's a better business than subscription, in fact the best business model.

People do not give much value to pass up information when they get offer to use a free service from trusted parties and these big guns are utilizing this psychology of human being.

Hmm - seems like they are experimenting this new idea. If someone buy the premium membership then they (YouTube) basically is sacrificing the earning from advertising with the subscription fee. $11.99/month (considering individual fee category) is relatively a good amount. Yearly $143.88, not bad. Although I am not sure if it's including or excluding VAT. Whatever it is, that's a very good amount which will be a confirmed constant income for YT.

In these case I see the adSense advertisers (especially channel owners) will be discouraged. They still is creating contents but is not getting a share (assuming YouTube is going to keep the 100% membership income).

I see it this way...
It's a win-win for YT. Those who buys subscription, they are paying not to see the ads stuffs and those who do not pay for subscription they are paying buy seeing ads meaning the money is coming from the advertisers. Both way YT is making money. It's just creating two classes of users. Paid and Free. But both are helping YT to make their money directly and indirectly.

I am not sure how this experiment will work out but I am sure these people know what they are doing. In fact they are the biggest brain now.

I'm not sure that they do know what they are doing. I think YouTube is on the skids as a result of demonetising political sites. FANG stocks are dropping as well, so it may be that the stock market is in agreement.

It actually has been happening for long by now. Youtube Red is a kind of new "Netflix", if you subscribe you will have access to their original series and movies, as well as being able to reproduce their videos while your phone is out of the youtube, with no announcements, and so.
To a Youtube partner, it doesn't mean your channel getting demonetize. You can continue being a partner even if you have not the Youtube Red service, and your videos are still going to be monetized.
The recent policies on the youtube changed how your videos get monetized:
- Now you will need 1000 subscribers.
- And more than 4 hours of total time in views.

That's all.
I don't think they are going to ask for all the creators to subscribe into a Red account, for, as it has been said, the youtube partners creators are making content and youtube earn a lot with their efforts. The only different thing I've recently seen is about subscribing into your channel: the ones with youtube red can ask their own subscribers to pay something, as in Patreon.
Also, your videos have different monetization if the views are coming from a normal user or a "Red" one. The second ones gives you more money from each view.

I would say the decline of Youtube would come from their way of going about things. There's been a lot of creators leaving Youtube due to the amount of times that their content has been copyright strike, or demonized for no reason. Plus, the percentage they are earning increasingly going in a downwards direction. The thing is people are always going to come to Youtube because it's a monopoly right now, and their adverts could be bypassed via an ad block extension.

I believe Youtube did this sort of thing before too. I'm sure it was called something like "Youtube Red" rather than Youtube Premium. Honestly, it just looks like a cheap way to get more money by locking content behind a paywall. Most of the stuff that's behind that paywall will be garbage too.

Yep, the fall of the youtube is already happening, maybe that's why they implemented their "Red" stuff, they offer in there some TV serials and movies, but I haven't seen already any of interest in their promotions, just a bunch of crap and tv serials about youtube stars, dancers, etc.
Most of the bigger YouTubers are already moving to Twich and other platforms, due to the restrictions and the new policies.
But, still, Youtube is kind of the bigger, and it will still be for a while...

There are so many subscription models now. It's too easy to get an adblocker, rendering income from ads non-existent.

I have been giving youTube red a go, just so it stopped interrupting things I was watching with an ever increasing amount of ads.

It's not been bad so far.

The subscription model is taking off everywhere, spotify, iTunes, Adobe, LOTS of internet services; cloud flare for one.

With the likes of Adobe, if, like me you use it daily it kind of makes sense. You always have the cutting edge software, it works great (I've tried, really tried to find an alternative that replaces it at a cheaper price... no joy so far).

I think if you only watch youtube occasionally it's not worth it, if you watch it a lot it's worth the month's free trial at least.
