You can register with the new name that you're hoping to use (but it can't be a name that already used) . Creating "alt" account is allowed according to the forum moderation policy.

IIRC there are some rare cases that theymos can change your username without donating or being a vip.
An example was Blazed.

There has been a few instances where "normal" people names have been changed.
It's not really mentioned because I suppose staff doesn't want to be overloaded with requests.

If you can donate 50 btc then you can ask https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=35 to change username. Otherwise it is not possible. Better you have to create a new one.

Actually, I have a hard time picking the best name so I just settle for a name of the city where I lived and suits me fine because I not only promoted my favorite city I have a good name soon many will just use their city as their username.
