Hello
I have a XFX 5870 running cgminer. When i started it and went in to the GPU setting i cant change the fan speed at all, nor can i se how hot it is but the Chassi casing is getting really hor, how can i controll the fan speed and fix the issue with it gettins so warm?

MSI Afterburner is a really popular GPU utility. Though it's not the most powerful control utility, it is extremely simple and easy to use. You can set up a temperature/fan speed curve to keep things right where you want them. It works with all brands of cards.

how warm is it gettings? i run my 5770 at 100 and my 6990s at 95. anything under 85 should be no problem at all.

i ahve thought about water cooling, but, since i leave this on 24/7 wont it just after a while be pushing around boiling water? or do i not understand how water cooling works?

Besides the GPU fan, you also need adequate case cooling - putting 200 watts of heat into your computer case is not a good idea unless you have the case fans to remove it. A couple 120mm fans are probably the minimum.

This would be great, isn't it? When you are awake in the morning, you can have instant boiling water for your instant coffee. But remember to top up the water later on.  i ahve thought about water cooling, but, since i leave this on 24/7 wont it just after a while be pushing around boiling water? or do i not understand how water cooling works?

everyone always says water cool but am i right? wont we just be pushing really hot water around? with 20 video cards for me it would almost be worth hooking it up to a fridge, but air cooling with high powered fans work good enough.

No serious miner uses water cooling. You would have to invest money in the water cooling system and gpu blocks, for no difference in the hashrate, simply increasing the investment cost and things that can break, and prolonging the time before you break even on your investment.

Get better cooling. Water cool it and better chassis cooling. Still not good for BC farming. Gaming yes, BC no. |

You understand that I mine bitcoins right? Water cooling is only used by the highest density setups in general due to it's cost (people with tens of gigahashes although some of us approach that on air as well) watercooling uses a radiator as long as the exhasust air from it is vented away properly the hot air will not be recirculated and the water will continue to be useful for cooling purpouses(please note use non conductive fluid not actual water) |

I am had my fair share of running gpu's 24/7/365 and to be honest most people do tend to be over protective for the temps
Yes any hardware can die over time but what is the cause, well most of the time its actually people just touching the parts without earthing.
My 5870 now runs overclocked at 880 Mhz at 99% load for almost a year at between 80 to 88c max depending the temp outside ofcourse
But i did not even crank up the fan for it, it just runs on auto and does it all fine.
Now here comes the important thing i open the case about every 2 months and clean the case and the openings for ventilation on the card and especially make sure the fan itself gets cleaned well. Second in almost every case is a extra spot for a fan most of the time its for a 9 or 12 cm fan, This is in many cases in the top rear behind the spot where the cpu is.
I would advice all to use it and put that fan there and let it suck the air out the case. You will see it will have a good effect on the temps for your system
I use also allways msi afterburner because its a very good tool, another tip i can give is to lower the clock of the memory to half the normal speed which will lower the temps a lot in my case also. What this kinda software need is core speed, memory is not very important here mine runs at 880 core speed and 900 memroy since i use it also for other means
