Gox isn't below $266 for one reason: it's users think they can get their coins or fiat back someday. I don't think it will happen, but it might. Eventually yes people will realize it won't and give their money back, and possibly create sell orders at 0.01, although since I'm clueless in particular I'll vote ice cream.

If their insolvency is proven, why not? But only if it is.

I can't fathom how they'd be insolvent. They banked so hard they'd have to be run by literally the dumbest people on Earth to have burned through all their revenue.

Fractional reserve goxing only works when few people want to withdraw, but not when a bank run happens.

They don't have to be to claim that they are. Classic ploy, run off with the money and play dumb about your business practices.

They'll make more by not doing that. And, likely, they'll be able to walk down the street without wondering which stranger they pass will be the one to send them to their maker.

Don't underestimate the power of greed. There is  a reason it is one of the deadly sins. (the reason is that people will fucking kill you over it)

If Gox never opens withdraws for BTC, then it doesn't matter what the BTC price is there, lol. So yes, in such a scenario it could go below $266 because there's no reason why it couldn't.

I like ice cream and I think going below $266 could be a piece of piss.

Whether the rest of the world decides the market has detached from Gox is much more important and something I don't have a clue about.

It is plunging right now : 365$, we are close to a free fall, the sentiment is extremely negative, all the traders are selling, all the bitcoin holders that were having doubts are selling or have already sold but let's remember that a lot of traders that are now in fiat or mostly in fiat will buy back, the short sellers have to buy back and there will be a lot of support at lower prices, starting with me

$288 for goxcoins versus $650 on other exchanges.  The market has spoken: what you're buying on MtGox are goxcoins, not bitcoins.  They're promises to pay you sometime in the future.  If MtGox has an over 50% discount for allegedly the same commodity then the market is saying MtGox is dead and buried.  Time to move on.

Gox going to $0...but then again any # price means nothing if customers can't get FIAT nor BTC out.

Wasn't there some planned downtime or is that yet to come?

The 300btc sell bot seems determined to bring the whole thing down. Wonder why the owner is doing this. Breaking the old ATH would be very bad even if it is isolated to gox. All this sucks.

Dear Mt. Gox Customers,
"
"
In order to implement our solution to the “transaction malleability” issue being
faced by bitcoin exchanges and businesses, we are going to have a 6-hour
downtime on all bitcoin deposits and internal bitcoin transfers in addition to the
current pause on bitcoin withdrawals. Trading will otherwise still be open as
usual.

Maintenance Schedule (approximate):

6pm ~ 12am JST (February 15

The above downtime period is approximate: it may be shortened or lengthened
as required. Once the implementation is complete customers will again be able
to deposit bitcoin, but we will be doing extensive testing before bitcoin
withdrawals are reactivated. We will publish an update on the situation on

Our solution should work in the short term, while a longer-term solution is being
discussed with the Bitcoin Core Dev team and the Bitcoin Foundation. We are

Where are they getting their info? According to gox main page it didn't happen until just minutes ago.

I wonder how long is gonna take to panic buy begin.. as there are only a few hours left for mtgox announcement. And whales will fight for eating btc. I dont think there is many idiots left willing to sell this low.. Only ones selling are doing it with the hope to buy lower.. but time is almost over..

Bullish on BitCoins

$288 for goxcoins versus $650 on other exchanges.  The market has spoken: what you're buying on MtGox are goxcoins, not bitcoins.  They're promises to pay you sometime in the future.  If MtGox has an over 50% discount for allegedly the same commodity then the market is saying MtGox is dead and buried.  Time to move on.

this.. Perhaps this should now be moved to altcoin discussion (TPFIC)

Exactly right.  MtGox bitcoins are a centralized altcoin at this point.

Bitcoin Fact: the price of bitcoin will not be greater than $70k for more than 25 consecutive days at any point in the rest of recorded human history.

Someone (multiple people) need to tell xe.com about this - They are still just using Gox rates and telling the world that a bitcoin is $255.

I'm sending one now.
