I have been inactive for a few months and after returning, I just have one question. I have read all about this merit system, but how do you tell if the post is deserving merit? all of us have different views on a constructive post? Do those posts have to fulfill a certain points or is it absolutely to personal estimation?

You are not the only one to ask this question. If you follow discussions in the Meta section, you'll realize that the definition of quality post has been brought up a countless times. There is no way to measure a quality post universally but you should be able to identify a quality post if you come across one. If your post deserves merits you'll earn them. After all, holding onto merits without awarding them will only lead to your merits "self-destructing" after some time. Apparently, no one would want their merits to just perish if there are quality posts to award.

Just read back those threads discussing about merit. Their are many topics about merit on the past months. Merit is existing since February I think. You can go here : Merit and New Requirements.

Here's my searches answers for questions about merit.
You can earn merits by just simply posting constructive and useful posts. Enjoy on posting don't understand if you're post will be merited it will merited if your post deserves it.

I have read all about this merit system, but how do you tell if the post is deserving merit? all of us have different views on a constructive post? Do those posts have to fulfill a certain points or is it absolutely to personal estimation?

Well, man, this is actually a personal estimation, so I can only give you my own point of view. To me, a thread deserving merits need to be:

- Original, of course. I always check if it is plagiarized before giving any merit.
- Made by a user with a certain kind of activity. I always check the user post history before meriting, because sometimes I`ve discovered that the user is just copy/pasting his/her same thread all over the forum, or that the user is just making bounty reports or begging in previous posts for merits, I don`t know, I just always take a look at the post history, just in case, and to the profile, if the user has a well-deserved negative trust, then I think twice.
- Needs to make sense to me. Even if I do not agree with the post, as well as the user can build a logical speech and be able to make his/her point in a reasonable way.
- Posts that implies a lot of job, even if I`m not particularly interested in the matter, I`m used to rewarding really well-done posts, with tons of effort behind, mostly if the posts are rather informative or interesting.
- Informed replies. If a user is replying and it is clear to me that he/she has a point and that, actually, he/she has read the whole thread, answers included, so he/she is actually giving a well-grounded opinion, and not an opinion based on the OP only or, worst, on the title.
- Good attitude towards the forum, in general. People actually concern about the forum, about how to help, how to improve it, how to join a conversation and make it richest...
- For fun. Sometimes one just merit another because the answer/thread or whatever is insanely funny.
.... that`s all that comes to my mind so far.

Wich kind of users I NEVER merit (and that usually ends on my ignored list):
- Merit seekers. There are a lot, some of them can make a good job hiding their true intentions, but, in general, this kind of user always take another`s one merited idea and try to make a poor copy.
- Merit beggers. Well, obviously I never give merit to someone asking for them.
- Trolls. Some people feel intelligent just by trolling others. I use to ignore them.
- Nonsense or off-topic replies. There are many on the forum, as "Thanks, really informative", or "Well done, sir", or, "Bitcoin changed my life too). I hate this and I ignore them or report them (depends on my mood). And if I see this kind of useless posts in someone`s post history, I don`t merit that guy, ever.
- People complaining. If you are just complaining about a ban, about merits, about ranking, about another user (unless it is something really serious), about whatever...ignored.
- ...etc

Actually, I did make a post some time ago related to your question, you can read it in here, in case you are interested: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3288547.msg34309665#msg34309665

all of us have different views on a constructive post?
Exactly dude, that's why giving merit only depends on one's estimation (other replies are are right too). Your taste or perspective on others' post is the one that will serve as your standard whether you will give them merit or not. Just an advice, use your brain and not your heart when giving merits; those members who are doing their best to contribute in this forum are the real ones who deserve merits and not the "merit beggars" or even your colleagues (assuming that they're posts are not good at all).

.... that`s all that comes to my mind so far.
Sarcastic and frank posts - those posts that are short and direct to the point with a little bit rude attitude.

I'm not so sure if this should be included here but based on what I've seen so far, there are posts of this kind that are really merited Grin.

My own opinion, there is no certain requests for a merit earned post. While theymos's purpose about merit system is to encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality. I still see many ANN, Bounty thread, useless posters earn a lot of merits.

There is so many answer all over the forum about your question. Actually merit system was implement to prevent spam from the forum. So on spammy post no one will send you merit. Thoes are send that's called merit abuser.
While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

From above quote we can understand shortly that who deserve merit. Yes every one have different opinion for quality post. Same thing for poster and reader. So if post is really HQ some will send you merit. For example some people like to post about scam ICO. Even this is not HQ post but on my view this is HQ post for forum members, this post can same money of many people. So for me this is high quality post and mostly  I send merit. But actually for all this is not HQ post. It's normal for every view there is poster also there is reader. If reader think that's HQ post & he have merit sure you will get merit.

There are no certain points to follow while making a post in order to be eligible for merits bu these things can help :

1) Make a relevant reply.

2) Make the reply fast.

3) Add some humor to the reply.

4) Adding images or stats can do wonders.

5) Try to establish yourself authority in a particular section.

6) Finally, try and test different sections.

Very obvious. It is a natural human tendency to expect something in return for a favor. Some members might thing that by giving merits to a campaign manger, they can get notcied or it will add some weight to their application.

Same for DT members, some might think that they can be on good books with them with this tactic.

The definition of Quality Post is subjective

One member may find your post as "quality post" then will give you a merit while other members may just engage you with a discussion without giving any merit.  Hence, I would like to suggest that just make it a habit to post something substantial and always (yes, always) be mindful of the rules of the forum.  Prevent yourself to be part of the ignored list of the merit sources.

I think giving a merit is really subjective.  As i have said above, we have our own definition of "quality post" and expectations to the users of this forum.  In my case, I would like to recommend to have lesser expectation on the "quality" of the post of a newbie compare to a full member/legendary.

He also posted this:

I'm not going to do reversals on mere abuse.

This was pretty much an exception because it was a "clear-cut case".

Theymos just made an exception in an exceptional case, so do not begin to spread false rumours, this is not a gossip TV program.

Giving merits is indeed subjective and is based on the personal.opinion of the sender as to what criteria they are using and following. It may all be different, but it doean't mean that it is necessarily wrong or unfair.

Having no specific standard or criteria to be followed as a format or a cheat sheet, every member will be challenged to create constructive posts that differs from the rest but is helpful, original and content-wise. This will encourage everyone and will give them the enthusiam to try to learn more and read more in order to contribute to the forum.

NO, they are not, and also this is not necessary. Theymos is not the responsible for the merit system, on the contrary, it is a non-moderated system and it is fine the way it is.
The topic you posted was a complete and total exception made by him, due to the gravity of the case, but I seriously doubt that he will imply himself in doing that again.

I thought you at least had a clue of how the merit system worked, man!!  Huh

Merit eventually turned into a forum token. if you look at the statistics, you will see what the measure really gets very limited number of people and with the quality of posts it has little connection.

I have been inactive for a few months and after returning, I just have one question. I have read all about this merit system, but how do you tell if the post is deserving merit? all of us have different views on a constructive post? Do those posts have to fulfill a certain points or is it absolutely to personal estimation?
Totally a personal and subjective "estimation". I might find some post constructive and worth meriting but another person might not think so. There is no problem in that unless there is some association and the accounts are connected. Giving merits to alt account is not allowed.

In general, constructive and helpful posts get merit,  but then you also have to consider the merit sources patrolling that section of the forum and the amount of merits they have left to distribute.

Still as a rough suggestion - Post only where you have something new and intuitive to add and not just agree to the person above you.

Yes, this is depends on the behavior of merit giver. He thinks, this is good post and adding some knowledge to this forum, they give them merit.

same post may be merited by some member, and same post may have some tough comment from other members.

You should not do copy paste and don't create thread blindly.  you should do some research before doing any post. Most of the members are doing only  bounty, that is not good.
