I was wondering if there is a way to support families in Venezuela through Bitcoin.
Perhaps you've heard about this person who asked for help in the Nano subreddit and eventually received enough Nano to buy 300KGS of food for his small community in Venezuela.

This is the story, which I've also posted in Altcoin Discussion:
Sorry if there is already a topic about this, but there has recently been a new update on this story, so I'm making a new one.

Reddit user 'Windows7733' recently made a topic on Reddit, saying that someone donated 0.5 Nano to him, which was almost an entire month's salary.
He used it to buy food for himself and his relatives.

Now after this story broke out, he has since then been able to buy a whopping 300KG of food for the people around him.
He's receiving more Nano every day, so soon he'll be able to buy even more food.

Check out the topics here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nanocurrency/comments/8v6dcy/got_my_first_05_nano_venezuelan_user/?st=jj97a6ns&sh=4d530240 (first topic)
https://www.reddit.com/r/nanocurrency/comments/8yfmrp/update_venezuelans_are_ready_to_work_with_you/ (update topic)

Very interesting story to say the least.

Now my real question: Is there a way to come into contact with individual people of families in Venezuela and support them through micro crypto donations?
It would be pretty amazing if there was a platform that made something like this possible.

I know this sort of thing could be abused, but it could be possible with a decent verification process and personal contact between donor and person in need.

When you read that story on the Nano subreddit, the guy from Venezuela mentions that 0.5 Nano (around 1.4 USD at time of writing) is almost an entire month's salary!
If I could possibly help people that much, with just donating a few dollars worth of crypto, count me in!

Wasn't sure whether to post this in Serious Discussion or here, can always move the topic when needed.

the problems of the venezuelans cannot be sustainably solved with "bitcoin"

i even would say bitcoin and bitcoin mining in venezuela will further damage to social integrity and supply of urban infrastructure, since the socialist thinking workers in venezuela that work and get paid in venezuelan currency, and work almost for free will get a mental purpose crisis seeing their countrymen, abusing, their electricity generating infrastructure, like that.

with bitcoin mining the venezuelans, will damage the security of their infrastructure, they will then create a competetitive destructive society.

I think it will also be nice if we can follow Paxful's example of how they stepped in to assist people who struggled with Bitcoin, when Backpage.com stopped accepting payment via Visa and MasterCard.

The people in Venezuela needs someone to help them to protect their current wealth from losing value and one of the ways of doing this is to convert it into a currency like Bitcoin that can be used as a store of value.

lol this forum is so full of idiots who think and speak without understanding and considering the bigger socioeconomic environment.

bitcoin will destroy their wealth even more because the socialist oriented infrastructure, workers will stop working, they will stop supplying their country men with elctricity or internet and simply create their own currency, the venzuelans will end up even poorer than before, if they abuse their socialist provided infrastrucutre for bitcoin mining.

are you even aware about the amount of labour necessary to upkeep a countries infrastructure to have internet and electricity?

-> you mine and support bitcoin in venezuella -> you will run out of infrastructure work in your community, no more socialism, no more electricity, no more internet.

venezuelans should instantly switch to stone paper or metal money if they even consider using bitcoin and screw the socialist infrastructure workers.

the socialist infrastructure worker in venezuella are not stupid programmed robots or money earning cattle, they are people like me and you, who think, trust and believe in a socialist vision, if they see, the infrastructure they were building being abused and wasted for mining bitcoin, like the russians did in early socialism (1918-1920) when they fed free socialist provided bread to their pigs, its over with socialism

get ready for king maduro of venezuella

I'm not talking about coming to a sustainable solution, there are better ways to come about that.
I'm just looking to offer support to individual people, I mean if sending a couple of dollars can literally provide food for almost an entire month, why not?

I hadn't even mentioned Bitcoin mining, so I don't know why you started about that?

bitcoin itself doesnt solve poverty issues, its not designed for that.

bitcoin and fighting general absolute poverty shouldnt be even mentioned in a sentence, bitcoin is an instrument of a mining cartel that seeks to enrich themselves. but bitcoins value comes not from them its from the perspective of decentralisation and reducing the influence of the banking cartels.

bitcoin is nothing else but purchasing power distributed, via stake of installed computation power. promoting such a currency in a society which gets their infrastructure managed by an aging group of socialist visionary workers is no great idea

@OP Actually, someone from my team has reached out to that redditor, I'll let you know if there's a response. So far nothing yet.

@KingScorpio I don't think OP is deluded with visions of saving humanity. Of course there's a bigger underlying issue to solve, and perhaps whatever is going on with Bitcoin in Venezuela may not solve problems, but it's undeniable that there are some roles that can be played (and already played) to alleviate some of the money problems there.

Some people want to change the world, that's fine. Others just want to lend a helping hand. If Bitcoin's the vehicle, then why not? At least they're trying.

those families need an income source not bitcoins, whats the use giving them some bitcoins?

so the logical conclusion is that those people seek to mine crypto, i also recently watched a documentary about venezueala where the mining was indeed main topic. which is no good idea as some cryptos especially and most of all bitcoin is literally:

if venezuelans use their socialist provided urban infrastructure to mine bitcoin they will lose their socialist provided infrastructure soon enough, then they can kill each other about who has access to urban infrastructure to mine cryptos.

Throwing stones while sitting in a glass house, is no good idea.

mining bitcoin in a socialist provided urban electricity, water and internet infrastructure environment is litereally throwing stones on the socialist workers that develop/ed and upkeep/upkept those, so few the country may have today.

bitocoin is a very bad vehicle to fight poverty, the bitcoin sect, doesnt give it away for free it sells it for us dollars, and it speculates with it, using it mainly to pay influencers and media outlets, to keep the masses speculating with bitcoin and protect its attention, to keep the people speculating or introduce new coins, like they did with litecoin, bitcoin cash bitcoin etc. the venezualans dont need those bitcoins what they need are services they can buy with us dollars, or euros,

KingScorpio is right, there is potentially more harm than good in incentivise those people in to mining.
However if OP wants to help, there is nothing that could stop him from doing so.
I think it will be best to look for people without crypto know how, on social media. Of course look for them personally rather than through some platform as founds can get defrauded. Reach such people with facebook or similar medium, ask questions unrelated with financial help to be sure you are dealing with genuine Venezuelan. Teach them what crypto is and than send some.
Looks like a hassle and probably is but what you are getting in return is metaphysical certitude of a real help.

Exactly. This sort of project in seeing how it can help to teach a man to fish by using the currency would be interesting.

I'm not going to quote and respond to every single one of you, but let me say that you have the wrong idea on what I'm trying to achieve here.
Look, those people need basic necessities in the first place, that can be achieved through simple donations, as I proposed.

Now I see your arguments about teaching them how to earn their own money, and I fully agree with that as well!

That's why I've reached out to some Venezuelans on Steemit, who are looking to set up an initiative there.
Check the top comment on my most recent Steemit post: https://steemit.com/crypto/@daan/nano-community-donates-over-300-kg-660-lbs-of-food-to-venezuelans

Leave your political talk out of this discussion please. Just for the record, I'm not even a socialist.

God damn it dude, due to hyperinflation, their regular income isn't worth anything. Those few Bitcoin donations could mean an entire month's worth of food, enough to give them time to work out another solution.

Just reading up, i dont know why people do reach out to the topic of fishing(just joking).  Cheesy I do get your point brother and this is just a simple thought or idea on how to donate. Talking about other things will just derailed such discussion but well we do have our own ideas but lets just stick on whats being said on op. Im really being easily to be touched into these kind of stories where small amount of money is already equivalent for a month salary which as a donator you would really be happy that you help out somehow those people on such condition.

Thanks for the follow-up link! I'll check back and catch up with where you're at. Crypto/Bitcoin charity is alive and well, and if more people knew how to get in touch with these guys, they might get a bit more food to the needy. I wonder if they could do with a bit of exposure, but also worry if it'd get them into trouble (the exposure).

I'm also not sure why there was some mining talk, but yeah, let's get back on point.

Thanks for that reply, I was starting to think that everybody just had negative comments Tongue
I'm not asking for money myself, just looking for a way to help these people, even if it's just a little bit.

Pffffft didn't know it was this hard to just have a simple discussion...

mark my words, you noobs will fail. because you think to egoistic to limited, there are reasons why the venezuelan currency is low value, and there are foundations that are very thin in venezuela that makes the people be able to mine bitcoin in the first place. bitcoin is not capable solving core socioeconomic issues, its only capable to be unreachable by the banking cartels. to reduce their influence. bitcoin is just a ram coin against banking cartels in the developed world, and their license inquisition, nothing more, it has from a humanist perspective not the capability to develop upkeep and sustainably protect socioeconomic structures. which the venezuelans simply have to develop if they want to be wealthier, this is the core problem and it cant be solved with bitcoin.

today maybe 90 out of 100 venezuelans have electricity and internet, if they start mining bitcoin 85 of 90 will lose their socialist provided infrastructure, making 85 of them basically without even electricity while only 5 where capable to somehow develop install and upkeep the computation power to pay the infrastructure worker in bitcoin which he then converts to us dollar, or other hard currencies.

besides a huge crime and corruption which will then make those "bitcoin miners" among venezuelans like a crime syndicate you wont be able to solve sustainable social issues you will create even more.

but go on i dont care, the sooner you drive against the wall the sooner people will cry for reasonable solutions as alternative. venezuelans will end up even poorer running after bitcoins, their next currency then wont be electronic it will be stones or metal, if thy are lucky still with numbers and text on it.

This forum is full of people, who cannot read and then make political statements that are not even applicable to this discussion. I never even mentioned mining in my reply, so I do not see where you got that from. ^idiot^

I do not care what their political views are, whatever they are doing now, is definitely not working. Some of the poorest countries in the world, have these socialist ideals. ^lol^

I am speaking to the people who can see that this is not working and who wants to protect their wealth. <Like many other countries did, when their stupid politics, destroyed their currencies> Examples : Zimbabwe / Greece / Cyprus

@KingScorpio I think you meant extinguish, not distinguish

Great job derailing the discussion, you keep talking about mining, while that has nothing to do with this topic.
Reading some of your trust ratings makes it pretty clear what kind of a person you are...

Now, on topic again, I've gotten into contact with some people from Venezuela and will start supporting them soon.

I'm looking to get some people accounts on Steemit and offer them delegations of Steem Power, so they can basically secure some extra income that way.
I've also reached out to the guy from the Nano thread (Hector) and offered to partner up with him.

Will hopefully post some pictures soon, just so you can see what kind of impact one single person can have.

their economy wont become better if you add an election via installed computation power. their economy will become worse, because then instead of using their infrastructure for development of values, they will waste it for mining "bitcoin" but there is no way to prevent that i suppose, they might be very selfish and idiotic and short term thinking, venezuelans are in that situation for a reason anyway.

You are still stuck on the mining thing for some reason.  Roll Eyes

Here is an example of what one of those citizens are doing to help those people and it has nothing to do with mining :
https://old.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/91r3eg/ama_venezuela/

You basically convert your local currency, in this case Bolivar to Bitcoin to protect it's value. You do not have to mine it, because there are enough out there already. <You just have to buy it>

Bitcoin can then protect the value more than the hyperinflation that are killing the Bolivar at the moment. So I hope you understand what we are trying to say here. This was done during the economic crisis to protect other currencies too, like Greece and Zimbabwe, when they also battled with similar problems.
