root@coined:/home# bitcoind -daemon
Bitcoin server starting
root@coined:/home#  bitcoind importprivkey "5zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzCia9dt7" "dude"
error: {"code":-4,"message":"Error adding key to wallet"}

It doesn't seem like rocket science.
Yes, I included the space in front of bitcoind

I don't know why you would have a space before bitcoind but that is irrelevant because you are getting the error.

My bet is that the privkey is bad, otherwise it would work.

import the key into blockchain.info

If that fails the key is corrupted.

I think you have to use
bitcoin-qt -server

before the daemon can import. You might also need the rpcport in the bitcoin.conf too, not sure.
