It is as safe as the project you invested in (Bitcoin is generally considered the safest crypto), where you kept your coins/tokens (Wallets is more preferred to exchanges) and how you handle/kept your personal data (private key, exchange password and email password should be securely kept).

I think the safety comes down the the individual. I think the technology is safe. Its out stupid mistakes which makes it unsafe. Just double check everything and make sure you take measures to keep yourself safe.
