Next round: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=48286.0In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post in every topic. Your ad text (ignoring link URLs, etc.) must be less than 150 characters in length, and it can only contain links: no other style. It will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons. There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up. Stats: On the 27 th of September, 2011 there were about 730,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 73,000 times. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme. Auction rulesPost your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the higest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled. So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot. - Starting bid per slot: 0.5 BTC - Minimum increment: 0.5 BTC- Auction ends: exactly 4 days after the time of this post You don't have to bid higher than the last bidder, but you have to bid 0.5 BTC or more higher than the minimum bid necessary to win some slots if the auction ends immediately. All future bid prices must be divisible by 0.5.If any bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total. Winners should PM me with the ad text.

I completely agree. But just about every other forum has some kind of advertising. I just wish it were limited to the index and not in every thread. Maybe it could be expanded on the index and removed from the threads. BTW. 8 slots @ 2btc each

Surprised by the low bids. This is the premier site of the Bitcoin community, very highly targeted audience, if you want to plug a product this is the place. I would set a minimum reserve price of 1$ CPM. If I understand correctly what is being sold is about 500.000 impressions/slot, which gives 125BTC/slot at 1$ CPM. Even at 20c CPM, the minimum some networks allow non-targeted CPM to fall, we're still talking about 25 BTC/slot.

The low bids are partially due to a previous user only gaining 0.4 BTC from ads.

That's fine. Probably the best strategy is to just bid what you want to pay. I'll sort it all out when the auction ends.

Dree12's list is correct. Your previous bids are canceled when you post an updated bid, so Talpan will get two slots and Teek will get one.
Now that I think about it more, the minimum increment rule doesn't make any sense. Let's just say that all future bids need to be divisible by 0.5.
This auction format is somewhat confusing, but I don't think it's worth my time to write a script. The forum also offers some abuse protection through the newbie restriction and other limits.

but I don't think it's worth my time to write a script. I've already written up the database structure on how I'd go about writing the script. slot -sid //just DB ID -number //actual slot number -round //whihc round / week are we at? -last_user //last person to make a bid
users -sid //just DB ID -username -password -allowed //are they allowed to bid -max //what's the highest they want to go on any bid
bids -sid //just DB ID -slot //what slot are they bidding on? -username -current //what's their bid currently? -max //whats the highest they want to go? If no one else wants the write the script, I'll just go ahead and do it.

* Order not fully completed I bid 2 btc for a slot.
Any bid below 4.5 will not currently get in (I'm assuming GoWest has priority since he bid first). If no one else wants the write the script, I'll just go ahead and do it.
This is not work a script would do better than a human; you would still be needed to enter the fields manually.

I guess you've never messed with PHP I'm fully capable of messing with PHP - it's just that the things it excels at (flexibility) are not needed. There will always be a need for someone to enter the bids, and that someone could just as easily place them in the correct slots.

The auction has ended. I've verified that Dree12's last list is the final result. Winners have received PMs, and I'll put up the ads late today (assuming I receive all payments and info in time). I think this format was pretty successful. It seemed to run smoothly once the exact rules were figured out, and the forum raised more BTC than any previous round. Thanks to dree12 for keeping track of the bids. Next round: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=48286.0
