I have several old PC's lying around. I'm wondering If I can just replace the GPU and PSU and use them more or less as is as mining rigs. So what matters for a mining rig? For instance if I'm trying to support a single 5850,

Cheapest Mobo that can support the GPU. Any reason why not?
No harddrive, using linuxcoin via usb. Any reason why not?
CPU? How much processing power is strictly required? More than 1 ghz?
Ram? 256 MB? 512? How much do you actually need?

More or less, yes.
