The problem is getting people who would do the manufacturing and there is a reason why it is in Asian countries like China. If the government cannot solve the manufacturing of goods that are imported every year then they will still need goods and product from other countries and even if they have manufactured such goods it will still be years before they can meet the demands in the market.

Should the U.S. stop importing from China?

That is a very good question.

I think the united states, russia and others have been shortsighted, focusing only on the short term in their business dealings with china. The basic business plan involving china is to setup a factory in china. Benefit from lower cost of labor to enable lower cost manufacturing of goods.

Unfortunately, the long term outlook involves china stealing all of the copyrighted and intellectual property utilized to produce high end goods. China can already produce their own counterfeit iphones and ipads having stolen patented technology from apple. The natural question there is whether or not apple has made itself obsolete by sharing much of its key technology with a country known for producing pirated goods and content.

It would seem that important technological advantages countries like the USA had over china are being sacrificed for a better short term profit.

That could be considered a bad business deal.

No. We cannot. We have too many factories in China.
Big technology companies all have foctories in China. The labor cost there is cheaper, plus all electricity and fees are cheaper. The US saved a lot of money by having factories and products produced in China. It is almost impossible to stop that. We dont have much land to build factories here in the US also.

This is every countries in the world problem, not only US.  They made a really cheap products that kill our local industry and now they dominate the world industry.  Maybe not to stop but a fair trade will help.

There will always be a country somewhere that others use for cheap labor. China just happens to be the largest one at the moment, and as mentioned above, they are taking advantage of it (like they should).

Bringing back manufacturing to the US might help the economy, but that's not really the direction we're heading in. The US is no longer a labor based economy; it's a skills based economy. It depends on talent and skill to run. That's why it's becoming freelance and gig based rather than full-time. Is it necessarily a bad thing? I don't think so.

The competitive environment in the US facilitates some of the best innovations in the world. The economy is like that because it forces people to evolve or get left behind. Unfortunately, the ones that get left behind often suffer.

It will be a question that is hard to answer because it carries a lot of meaning here. We are just normal people and not economic politicians here. These are the two countries that can have a huge impact on the world, they have their strengths and weaknesses. However, the view of a normal person can not be accurate because it has many factors. You imagine what is happening ahead of you. It must not be true, you should remember that. Wink

It would seem that important technological advantages countries like the USA had over china are being sacrificed for a better short term profit.

The business deal has already gone bad. It can only go worse now! When apple started producing iphone and other apple products, they have chosen a Chinese company named Foxconn to manufacture their products in China itself. The iphone that you use in USA today, is manufactured in China only and the contract is awarded to them by Apple only just for cheap labour and make maximum profit out of each unit. Still Iphone is the costliest phone in the world. Apple didn't become a near-trillion dollars country just like that!

Now compare about the cheap labour force that China can offer. An average labour in Chinese factories are paid less than $260 monthly for 11 hours shift and 6 days a week. A first world country can't beat that cost. So before you scream that Chinese people are stealing their technologies, think how the technologies are given to them!

What Trump is doing, he is inviting the third world war upon the world population. Take an example of the recent case with Iran! Who the hell USA is to put ban on a country when United Nations has chosen to stay silent. The biggest private oil refinery of China now declared to stop buying crude from USA and shift their business to Iran completely. Why do you think the world will let the USA overrule them on their own decisions. Bad days are coming for USA and if all these continues, its economy will again see a doomsday much harder to overcome!

I thinking on this matter is don't stop, but slow it down. I don't think we should stop imports from China at all. I do believe that we should cut down a bit and start making our own products. We were a country built on manufacturing. What happened? Did we get lazy and in good times we decided buying cheap would be faster? This is a major reason the economy is where it is today, we stopped making and chose buying.

It's hard to make our own products since China has the technology to supply atleast every nation's needs. Slowing down the trades to China will only make the economy slow too. Even USA needs China more than any other nations has to offer.

I'm not a US citizen, but if would be better if US would just import what the country needed. I'm under the impression that US has been relying totally on imports from Technology to even Tys you can found in the US. The truth is, the only advantage China has its it manpower and cheap labor cost, in other words, sweat shops. If the US government will just look at what items should be imported and let the local manpower produce that will benefit and stir the economy then that would be cool. Or perhaps raised tax for imported items coming from China? The US economy is totally fucked up, so I guess its really important for the nation to decide whether to accept useless item but cheap or let the US labor and manufacturing to the thing but with the cost much higher.

If the United States stops importing from China, the two countries will lose.
In the end, the United States is a part of the world that can not manufacture everything on its own, so it must import from some countries.
If you notice Trump's decisions, he gets things up, and then he accepts the dialogue to get the best deal as he did with North Korea.
There are a lot of things going on in the world and opening a trade war is not a judgmental option, "at least for now"

Well that is called as maintaining the international relations and at the same time maintaining your countries economy in proper way. The corporate relations are very much different, the cost cutting and labour cost is touching the skies and I guess such importing makes things very much easier for most of the manufacturers. US is giant continent and its needs are expanding like space so its always better to have extra sourced facilities to work for them. Its cheap and that cheap process is what making products and services cheap inside the country as well. So its benefit for the people and nation as well.

Of course, every country must itself produce goods that are necessary for citizens.  And do not blame China.  They can give a more or less normal product for a cheap price.

The move by the United States to increase tariffs on China will certainly have a negative impact on the economies of the two countries. In the short term, it may be better for the United States.

Now officially at a trillion! Western countries wouldn't exist if they couldn't exploit Cheap Chinese Labor.

I think Trump has set out deliberately to dismantle the US, piece by piece. Just observe the look on his face when he says things like this. He's perfectly aware of the chaos he is reaping, and doesn't give a damn about it. This is the beginning of the end for the American Empire, just like Gorbachev was the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union. Both leaders were well aware of how they were destroying their countries.

Someone must have set them off to do this on purpose.

The increasing demand for trade between China and the other countries means that more and more customers are exposed to the risks of shipping Chinese goods. However, imports from China are still much cheaper than production.

Buying cheap is always better. The US labor force can't compete with the chinese labor force in terms of price, quantity and labor regulations. Most people in China work 10-12 hours per day.
By the way,why are complaining about the US economy? The US economy growth is at record peaks.
The unemployment rate goes gown.I guess that there is manifacturing in the USA.
