Bitcoin was created with the intention to create digital currency which is not having any regulation.  Instead of using it as currency people used it as an source of investment. 

Due to Bitcoin's easy transaction utility demand increased more in comparison to supply.  So with the increase in demand the price started rising upwards.  With the fluctuations in the price many speculators also entered in this resulting in very much increase in prices.  Fluctuations made it a tool of speculations.

there are several types of investments long term investment short term investment and the best I want to refer is that mining.It needs one time investment and do it if the cost of electricity is low in your area... otherwise electricity bill will be more than your profit..Now I will prefer short term investment but never long term investment.
