Which altcoin will succeed ?

I am just curious. For which coin it's worth to invest your pc power, what do you think ?

but what about newbies & CPU miners, people who don't want to invest in fast GPUs, they started too late for getting a decent amount of bitcoins so CPU currencies are their chance now

If/when it becomes profitable to invest specialized hardware into mining a CPU chain, everyone without the funds to keep up won't be able to.

Also, the amount of bitcoins you receive (due to the difficulty of those with higher end GPU's) is irrelevant.  It doesn't matter if I mine 1btc a month @ 1000 USD, or 5 a month @ 200 USD, or 20 a month @ 50 USD - it all comes down to the purchasing power of said coins.

i would certainly advise all newbies away from ACs. .....and cpu mining has absolutely nothing to do with the longevity/lifespan of the coin.

I think the Alt Cryptocurrencies subforum here is obviously a little more open minded to all coins, I wonder how the results would look if Bitcoin was a choice.

I created this poll for alternate coins only because I'm totally sure that Bitcoin will remain #1 digital coin. Despite this I think there's enough space for another coin which will become a real alternative to BTC. Not competition but an alternative. Something like gold and silver.

I'd say in the long run we have a >50% chance that any fork will succeed (except namecoin this has pretty much been established by now if you view it the way as it was intended to)

I am skeptical that it will be any of those, without hesitation I vote for Litecoin if any. I think that it is likely that we get another iteration in a somewhat larger timeframe.
Especially the disadvantage of the necessity of pools hasn't been addressed yet but it could take a while till a solution emerges.

my answer would still be the same; none of them.

realistically, the likelyhood of btc succeeding is extremely small (and the chances of an alt currency succeeding are even smaller than that).

I'd say -most- of the support for any current alt-chain is fueled by pure speculation.  Every alt-chain so far has offered massive profit over BTC during the first few days of an exchange being open IF you were lucky enough to mine a few blocks at launch.

If a new chain were to be launched which had significant design improvements over Bitcoin, the alt-chain subforum wouldn't be able to contain it's newsworthiness.

How do you measure success. I'd say it would be successful if prices would stay at current levels in the following years with higher transaction fees.
Obviously it would be successful if prices rise substantially regardless of fees.

I also think it would be successful if 99% of people left as a niche solution. (Compare the relative success of tor)

The problem with reassuring success of the network is not if people who gambled upon wide success are successful themselves.

Well worded, I agree.   I am trying to think of the other factors that would motivate people toward any of these coins.   Something about the technology no doubt would sway a person.  Spite, never underestimate the power of seeing someone e-hurt as some sick form of motivation.   I hope there are more reasons.

My only really CPU-mineworthy rig is currently quite too occupied with VMs and work-stuff for me to mine anything, even TBX

How do you measure success....

i would say that when it has been used for a substantial amount of time (years), with a reliable amount of stability, and is used for something other than daytrading or purchasing illegal goods, then it will be successful.

is it possible that BTC will reach this mark? yes.

i just dont think its very likely.
