just because we don't see wild rises like last year, specially near the end, it doesn't mean we are in a bear market. this has been a transition phase for some time now. we have had good signs of the phase coming to an end and entering the bull mode but that didn't last and we stayed in this phase. and possibly will be here with sideways movement for a while.

I keep going back to the possibility that these drops that we see these days in bitcoin are caused mainly by the over-pumped altcoins that have been getting dumped for a while now. that is a lot of money that has been exiting the market and most of it is exiting through bitcoin and that can effectively bring its price down.
we have had clear example of it too. for example when Bancor was hacked and millions of dollars worth of Ether was stolen the dump of ETH brought bitcoin price down with it.
in this case the drops will end when altcoin dumps are over.

No one knows that mate. And no one will be able to predict anything like that so easily. I mean there are technical analysis which predicted that year 2018 will bring price above 20K USD per bitcoin but nothing like happened and over that bitcoin started going down all the time. I think we know very well this market will recover when it has to recover and when lots of people are going to put their money at stake with the bitcoin.

There are so many ups and downs in the current market and we are seeng this since start of the year. Unless and until the market doesnt get condensed with huge investment, it is going no where.

This is not advice at all, just a simple method I personally use when there are dips or the market is in bear territory. I originally bought during the peak in end of 2013, watched as my modest amount of coins slowly trickled down in value for almost 3 years. It's quite simple, I have a small amount I keep to spend on crypto per month. A fixed budget. Any time there is a dip of close to 10% in the market I do a little "shopping". Typically pick up interesting coins or tokens that I've had my eye on in the past or ones that have caught my interest recently.

I consider myself to be quite cautious and risk adverse by this stage, but I certainly would not trade or take part in buying/selling, I am in it for the long term - and this is by no means some investment strategy, it's simple, stable, cautious method I use than keeps me psychologically happy with the situation

I'm actually excited to see a "significant" dip. Alternatively I am naturally happy when the market goes up. Of course I have no idea what will happen in the future, but I do know what's happened in the past, and anyone who has bought during dips in the last few years and held onto the coins has generally done well (of course traders and good knowledgeable buyers/sellers have also done well, but that's a different sphere)

In order to keep "real-time" track of the market I use a portfolio app on the phone, load in imaginary amounts of the top 50 or so coins, and that is a fairly good indicator of which way it's moving and how fast. You have way more experiences as you had in 2013, so you cant really compare your personal felling with those at that time. I am sure that big part of those that entered crypto in 2017 right now fells quite desperate. You must be right. When people are repeating the mistakes of losing hope on bitcoin markets and then regretting when prices are rising, how we can expect the bear market to find an end ? If you are looking at the whole year chart of bitcoin or crypto market we can easily say that we are still on top compare to the previous year but if you see the chart this year we can say that bear market is the trend this year. $20k price of bitcoin might be a result of price manipulation but many people are trap on that level so this make investors trust fall also. This bear trend will end if there’s a big good news out in the market.

After April 2013, we only dropped 81% from the high.

We also used to talk about 2012 as a bubble back in the old days. We dropped 50% from the highs when it crashed.

Anyway, it really depends if this is a shorter term consolidation like mid 2012 or mid 2013, or a longer term bear market like 2014. The reality is that none of the bubbles will ever look quite the same as one another. We should be prepared for something different.

I agree that there is a strong support along the line of $6K, but we can't really tell if we have bottom this year because everyone is waiting for the final verdict on Van Ecyk / Solid X ETF proposal. I know that everyone calls not to get excited or don't get infatuated with this hype.

I believe we are not in a "bear market" in some sense. I think we were in a bull market and the prices went up really high however it dropped pretty quickly. We're not even really in a bear market anymore, and haven't been for a while. We're in a neutral market. Bitcoin went under $6000 7 months ago and despite three more tries throughout the year to knock it below that price it hasn't once gone below that level. We've just been scraping the bottom of the market for 7 months. But as the highs get lower and lower ($11.7k -> $9.8k -> $8.4k -> $7.3k?) we are getting closer and closer to the time when even the bears will accept that their is nowhere to go but up. The lower highs in conjunction with the consistent bottom at ~$6k means the crash is getting less and less volatile.

Basically we are probably out of the crashing phase since there is no room to crash anymore, and we may spend a bit of time just chillin' on the bottom in the $6000s and $7000s (might be at the start of that right now) before the market accepts that now is the last time to buy in low before it starts heading up again. I'd give a 6 month time frame in which the market finally accepts there is nowhere to crash anymore and it finishes scrapping along the bottom and the next long gradual bull market begins. I like said earlier the crypto market is some how resisting the dip in price trend and if the market continue to pose this trend the bear market will end anytime soon.
