Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Is it worth the effort?  How much would you be able to generate with very little or no time investment after setup?

the diff went up since the article was written

also after the 24 hours passed and you know your speed
you can use this site to see it's profitability http://sancrypto.info/

Depends on your GPU
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Find your GPU here and put the hashrate here http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator

you will find it useless but if you do it as a long term investment it may pay very good since there are people that say BTC can reach even 500.000$(can't find the link .... but there was someone that said it could go to that price if it's widely adopted)

I would definitely go for CPU mining if you want to mine. But I would sell those laptops and buy BTC instead or a miner Wink

If you don't mind killing the laptops you can mine.  Laptops will usually die in a couple months if you 100% load them for hours on end.  The RMA/shipping might be more than what you would make mining.

Having said that, probably not worth GPU mining but mining a CPU coin might be profitable (again at the expense of a dead fan and possibly a dead board).

I actually need these laptops to keep running.  Mining isn't their primary purpose.  Can I load them at 50%?

Is it safer to GPU mine instead of CPU?
