Blockchain is already being introduced in Africa. And the Blockchain Africa Conference in 2019 will only pique interest and drive people to go deep into the technology.

As well as anywhere else, in Africa blockchain has many use cases and benefits. Secure and middlemen-free payments, cheaper transactions and services, fraudless and transparent elections, less human errors and inefficiencies.

We already have some excellent examples of blockchain usage in Africa:

  • In Kenya, the government set up a blockchain to investigate and apply use cases for government services (education certificate verification, traffic management and financial transactions).
  • In Uganda, banks will adopt blockchain technology where necessary to lower operational costs and risks
  • In Sierra Leone, Swiss company Agora applied blockchain to ensure a fair count of electoral votes.
  • In Ghana, a blockchain has been used to settle land disputes and store land registrations since 2016.

Moreover, there are enough circumstances that contribute to the growing popularity of the blockchain in Africa today. A significant part of African population is unbanked. Many African countries have weak and unreliable currencies. The level of corruption and inflation in some African countries is also very high.

So, I believe that blockchain technology can do much good in Africa and should be developed.

Thank you so much for this. There is also kurecoin which just successfully completed its ICO. There is Cheetah Africa, there is ditcoin, thee is eosnigeriago which is a BP on the EOS blockchain and a host of other blockchain projects.

If blockchain technology should be introduced to any other continent, why not Africa, of course Africans desire blockchain technology and I would be glad if it happens very soon.

To add to what have already been said, blockchain technology is also alive and well in Africa in the form of Bitcoin:

In parts of the continent - especially commercial hubs like Lagos, Nairobi and Johannesburg - a small but growing number of people are finding that cryptocurrencies offer a cheaper solution to an expensive problem - transferring funds across borders.

The technology platform Bitpesa uses Bitcoin as a medium to transfer cash across borders.

[...]

"If African developers, entrepreneurs, and governments can leverage blockchain technologies, they may have a shot at tackling some of the continent's most intractable problems of the unbanked masses, digital identities, untrusted voting systems, to name only a few applications," Mr Blazevic explains.

There really isn't a place left where you could "introduce" blockchain technology as everyone is already beginning to realize its potential.

Blockchain and cryptocurrencies in Africa will be very beneficial for the population there. They will have a gateway to deal with their high rates of inflation and earn money from another industry that it doesn't operate there.

So, I believe that blockchain technology can do much good in Africa and should be developed.

Wow I just knew this and to think Africa branded a poor country yet they be able to adopt this like poverty didn't hinder them. Many first world country is pessimistic to use this and they should be looking at what Africa achieved.

I have this realization that everything can happen as long as you have the eagerness to grow.

Blockchain is very useful for many uses. In Africa it would be great if they implement electronic voting, and some other uses, which can be implement with blockchain

Really great informative post. Merited it Smiley
Im wondering tho, in Ghana for example, do they use blockchain as blockchain which is bitcoin or they use database calling it blockchain. Without bitcoin computing power securing network, "blockchain" is just database as we know them from ~40 years?

The project is called Bitland, it exists since 2016. Bitland Ghana is part of Bitland Global LLC. They use the OpenLedger platform by BitShares as the basis of their blockchain. Since the blockchain requires a reliable supply of electricity and internet connectivity, the company will build centers (as part of a 4 your plan) to connect communities to a wi-fi network and reliable electricity.

The Bitland blockchain uses a token, Cadastral, for its operations. Cadastral is needed to buy or sell land, register a land title, buy properties, settle disputes, among others. Cadastral is not mined and a maximum of 30 million Cadastrals will be created. 20 million Cadastrals was made available in Bitland’s ICO held in 2016.  3 million Cadastrals will be used as block rewards over the next 99 years, 2 million for the payment of employees and contractors, 4 million will be sold directly to governments and 1 million privately sold to fund a multi-currency reserve including the US dollar, Ghana Cedi and Bitcoin. Furthermore, 20% of proceeds from the use of cadastral on the blockchain will go to a reserve.

Wow that sounds really innovative. Im not sure how much Bitland is in Ghana really, or this is only little branch in Ghana of global company. Its not REALLY ghana based but most important here that its used in Ghana for land register etc.
Im really suprised here, thanks for all that additional informations.
