Hi

Newbie here. Altcurrencies have interested me for a while and I have been browsing this forum but never ever posted anything so this is my first post! Wink

I did a bit of browsing on various cryptocurrency forums and I came across this coin called SolarCoin (http://solarcoin.org/). There does not seem to be any sort of announcement thread here on bitcointalk forums and was wondering have any of you guys looked into this coin and what you think about it.

Are you sure there's no announcement here? Pretty much all the coins are either pre-announced or announced in the alt section.

SolarCoin? Is this a coin that will go down at the end of the day only to rise the next?

I haven't heard of it before - I tend not to pay too much attention to anything that is not listed on BTC-E.

Haha, maybe people will worship it and films will be written about its existence.

I visited the SolarCoin website, I can't get my head around it, I'm clearly not very bright.

Hmm I do not want to waste precious hash resources on a coin that will fail miserably. I understand altcurrencies is risky and coins with shaky specs and info tends to fail, but a coin that's not yet on an exchange does not really mean it's a bad coin.

Nobody said that it was a bad coin, but now that you brought it up I would say that a coin is only of worth once it is available for purchase on exchanges. At least it doesn't appear to be a piss-take coin lol.

For what it is worth, I am a volunteer who helped do the research on the carbon footprint model for SolarCoin and the marginal utility econ model for bit-coin.

The OCA (open currency association) behind SolarCoin (SLR) has some serious finance and environmental people behind it.
I am a volunteer helping out that team. http://thenatureofvalue.com/about-the-author.htm bio here:

I am happy to answer questions about the solar energy component, solar etc.or basics about the coin mechanics and generator pool that holds the pre-mine. No SLR can circulate from that pool until the OCA is set-up and charter agreed to by community members. Then the generator pool can only be allocated to those submitting proof of solar energy production ( a physical proof of work).

The large pre-mine is meant for 40 years of distribution to solar energy producers with verified claims to "proof of work" such as SRECs in the US at the rate of 1 SLR/ 1 MWh production. the team is at work arranging deals in N.America, MENA, Europe and Asia.

There are some bids on twitter for it. (not mine)

The OCA put out a tool to generate bid/ask hash tag offers for SolarCoin, Bitcoin and Litecoin. http://solarcoin.org/buy-bitcoin-solarcoin-without-exchanges-using-175-currencies-and-19-clearing-mechanisms-globally/

I know the person bidding and he is willing to do the deal.  see twitter: #Buying:SLR:USD Buying 25000 SLR for 25 USD via #PayPal #SLR:USDsize25 USD UID#12EDEECF0-6647 at 0.001

Solarcoin (§ SLR) are like airmiles. Each 1 Mhw generated gets you §1 free. Solarcoins can purchase what others will trade: USD,BTC, Soy candles..etc.
