Shares: 0 accepted after 12 hours of mining

I am currently mining on the deepbit.net pool and I left my guiminer (puddinpop's i beleve) to run overnight, when i came back, i had no shares accepted yet. My khash/s rate is around 250-300.

If you're mining with a cpu it will take some time to have a valid share accepted. My buddy tried with his MacBook Pro and the most he had was 8 shares in a day

No share overnight with 286khash/s is pretty possible (with little bad luck). If you don't have GPU, with this CPU mining isn't for you :-(.

i honestly have no clue if i have a GPU, the computer im using is from 2003, and i wanted to know what it would be like to bitcoin mine.

Honestly, it won't be worth it. If the computer is that old, you probably wont even be able to put in a GPU that would be worth while either.

Most people fail to realize that mining with a CPU may be impossible because sometimes a block is found before you are able to complete a share. So this is not a matter of economic viability: having a GPU is a requirement for mining.

Not slow enough. If a block gets found by the network, and you still haven't submitted a single share, your node starts hashing away at a different nonce, and you don't even get one stab at submitting a share.

Bitcoin mining is a very specialized business, you'll be better off investing what you would've paid for electricity into Bitcoins directly, or looking into a CPU-specific alternate crypto-currency, such as Litecoin, Tenebrix, or Solidcoin.

No. Mining with CPU has (proportionally to its hashrate) the same chance as mining with GPU. All miners are refreshing their work periodically every few seconds regardless on their hashrate, so slow mining isn't a reason for "skipping a block".

But CPU mining sucks for economic viability, of course.

GPU (Graphics processing unit) is simply "better graphic card", something like ATI Radeon 5870.

No. Mining with CPU has (proportionally to its hashrate) the same chance as mining with GPU. All miners are refreshing their work periodically every few seconds regardless on their hashrate, so slow mining isn't a reason for "skipping a block".

This would be true if you were solo mining with a CPU. Just to give you some figures: if you solo mine with a CPU - let's say you get around 2 MHash/s - you will have a 50% chance of finding a block in around 100 years.

So the alternative is to mine at a pool. But the pool only pays if you submit a share and since you can't submit a share fast enough, you will not earn anything. It's "theoretically" the same chance, but in real world you will simply not get paid unless your pool pays for invalid shares (and you need to tweak your client to disable long polling or something...)
