There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Lost a few BTC doing dumb things, wised up and made it all back plus a few extra. Overal I sold 1,500(66%profit) bucks worth of stuff on ebay for almost triple what I really paid for it (feathercoins back then sold for triple on ebay).

Got in on mooncoin at 1 satoshi but not for much, then bought mooncoins at 10 satoshi and almost tripled my btc again. overall i probably have 8 btc total now. gambled a bit, lost 1 btc, then got it all back so im barely postive on just dice.

About 370 total although it could be slightly higher because I can't remember the exact balance I had at Bitcoinica. It's really more like 320 because BTCe gave me back the 49 and change I lost during their hack.

You must be an early adopter with a lot of overall coins because losing 370 coins is huge ... Sad

I've lost about a sixth of my total coins. I started mining in early 2011 and had anywhere between 6-10 GH/s going 24/7 for over 2 years. Back then I was known as CornedBeefHash.

Leaving a balance on an exchange is a necessary evil for traders. You can't trade what isn't in your account. I don't think there's a good solution for that one. I've easily made as much as I've lost by trading at an exchange. On one day right after the Silk Road news hit I made 173 coins in about 6 hours by selling through the crash and buying at the bottom. I also read a few posts written by Coblee and TerryTibbs about Litecoin and started mining that right at the beginning when it was worthless. I traded them into Bitcoin a couple of months ago. I used to treat Bitcoin like Monopoly money because I don't think I believed that it would really ever have a lot of value. I was bummed for a long time because I didn't sell above $15 when it crashed to $2 and stayed there. lol

Don't feel too bad for people that have lost a lot of money. They had a lot of money to lose. Almost no one puts all their eggs in one basket. For example, Erik Voorhees (an American that ran to Panama, former employee of the defunct BitInstant and founder of the SatoshiDice long con) said he lost over a quarter million at MtGox. BooHoo Erik, you're worth tens of millions. Feel sorry for the little guy that lost half a Bitcoin. That was probably all the investment money he had in the world and he threw it away on a dream being pitched on this forum every day. The little guy is the real loser.
