Introduction and Goals

Ballzcoin is a light-hearted cryptocurrency project based on the Go implementation of Ethereum. The primary goals of Ballzcoin are as follows:

• To encourage talking about our balls! Men’s health charities will be supported via the block reward. But wait a minute! Ballzcoin is an equal opportunities cryptocurrency, and so women’s and children’s health charities will also be supported.
• Provide an alternative decentralized Proof of Work based blockchain to run EVM smart contracts and DApps, without a future transition to Proof of Stake.
• Encourage and incentivize the development of DApps to run on the Ballzcoin network, with an emphasis on fun DApps. This will include providing resources to game developers to make it easier to incorporate Ballzcoin into the game code.
• Implement a difficulty adjustment algorithm that responds rapidly to changes in mining hash rate, to maintain the target average block time under changing network conditions.
• Keep the project fun and open source!
• All goals and expectations will be kept realistic.

• Block reward (miner): Staggered from 5 coins in year 1 to 0.5 coins from year 6
• Block reward (charity): Equivalent to 5% of miner reward, split between 10 charities who will independently hold the charity accounts
• Premine: 1.5 million (equivalent to ~4% of total supply after 5 years)

Ballzcoin is currently a solo developer project, however it is anticipated that the team will expand as the project progresses.  


Release Details

The client binaries, GUI wallets, and source code will all be made public at approximately 8.30PM on 15th September 2018 via links posted here. The first 1000 blocks will have zero miner payout. This will hopefully give people time to download the binaries or compile from source before payouts start.  

As the client is based on Go Ethereum, any GPU mining software for Ethereum should be capable of mining Ballzcoin. For solo mining, use RPC port 8641.

Solo Mining Instructions

An account must first be set up and configured as the etherbase (your primary account will automatically be configured as the etherbase). Then:

1. Start ballzcoin in console mode with RPC port open:
ballzcoin console --rpc

2. Wait for network synchronization. Within about 15 seconds, you should start seeing 'Imported new chain segment blocks = n' appear on the screen (n being a number between 1 and 2048). When n drops to 1, the entire chain has been imported, and you can start mining.

3. Start mining with Claymore:

ethdcrminer64 -allcoins 1 -retrydelay 10 -epool http://127.0.0.1:8641

Finally, this is not an ICO. Ballzcoin can be accumulated by mining, trading on exchanges (going forward), and obtained by DApp developers via bounties from the premine.

Apologies for my lack of response to anyone these last few days. I can't post, edit or PM (just get a blank page or http 500 error from the forum after pressing post). Trying on a different PC from a different IP to see if this works, if so then I will start addressing the various questions that have been asked...

Firstly, thanks to everyone who has posted questions, comments (positive and negative!) and shown interest in the project. Rather than make multiple posts, I have tried to cover most of the questions people have asked here.


Website

The website will be up soon, and I will update this thread when done. Rather than promote the project before the code was ready, the focus has been on thoroughly testing the code to make sure no bugs have been introduced as a result of the changes to the original Ethereum code (mainly the new difficulty adjustment algorithm). The source code and binaries have been posted here as the first public step, to give any interested Bitcointalk members a chance to get a head start on mining before promotion of the coin starts in earnest. The next priority is the website.


Discord

There are no immediate plans to start a discord channel for the project, however this may change if (when?) the project generates enough interest to warrant it. For now, this thread is the best place to ask any questions.


Charity

There is some information in the white paper on the charity distribution mechanism, but essentially it will work as follows:

- There are 10 account addresses embedded into the code that will start accumulating coins ~6 months after the launch date. The account private keys will be given to charities over the next 6 months. 
- Accounts will only be given to registered charities who are already established. New charities will not be created as part of the project.
- Ballzcoin itself is not a charity.


Mining

A big thanks to TerraHash.cc, ButSa, and thedives for setting up pools. I will add the links to the announcement post shortly.

For those who are keen, the instructions for solo mining with Claymore are as follows:

1. Start ballzcoin in console mode with RPC port open:
ballzcoin console --rpc

Can you post some more information please:

- Are you using the command line wallet or GUI wallet? Linux or Windows?
- Is the chain simply not downloading, or are you getting an error message?

The chain is currently at block height 40349 as I write this and the bootnodes are online and working, so in theory you shouldn't have any issues. To diagnose the issue, you could try:

Run the command line wallet from a terminal:

>ballzcoin console

It should boot up. Wait around 15 seconds, and type admin.peers into the console. Do you see a number of IP addresses (and other info) come up?

If not, check your firewall settings. In particular, make sure UDP port 31805 is open.

1. Close the wallet.
2. Check the file size for 'ballzcoin.exe' in the following folder: C:\Users\your.username\AppData\Roaming\Ballzcoin-Ballzbrowser-Wallet\binaries\ballzcoin\unpacked
3. If the file size is 0MB, delete the exe file (don't delete anything else!).
4. Download the Windows client binary in the announcement post, extract, and copy ballzcoin.exe to the folder to replace the deleted file.
5. Start the wallet. Does it work?

If this solves the issue, I will investigate further before creating a permanent fix.

Here is another workaround if you get "Ballzcoin node connection error" when starting the GUI wallet (it seems to be a problem with some PC's and not others):

1. Run the client binary in console mode (see this post).
2. Wait for the client to sync and download the blockchain.
3. Run the GUI wallet. The wallet should load up.
4. After closing the GUI wallet, the correct way to exit the client is by typing 'exit' into the console.

- Which exchanges are willing to list Ballzcoin.

- Whether any exchanges will list the coin without charging a fee (obviously this would be the ideal outcome!). As the source code is based on Ethereum, there should be no major technical challenges, so it will come down to individual exchange policies.

I do not expect this to be a quick process, and please don't take this to mean that a listing is going to happen soon! Where possible I will post the outcome of any discussions here, if I am allowed under the confidentiality rules of each exchange.

One more question, how about the plan of Ballzcoin to adjust a little bit in order to become ASIC-resistant in the future?

I won't be mentioning any exchange names until they have been contacted, and a decision made either way. This is partly because some exchanges have confidentiality requirements, and I do not want to jeopardise any potential listings by posting anything here that I shouldn't.

Regarding ASIC resistance, I like the idea that a person with a single GPU can participate in the network and get a few coins, and that those who have invested in larger GPU mining rigs get a fair reward for their services in securing the network. As you may know, there is a proposal to implement ProgPOW in Ethereum, which in theory will provide ASIC resistance. If this happens and proves stable / no issues, I will update the Ballzcoin client to implement ProgPOW.
