Curious if it's normal for my rig to be pulling ~180W more than just what the cards are pulling... specs below:

Hardware:
Mobo:        ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ LGA 1151 Intel H110
CPU:          Intel Celeron G3930 Kaby Lake Dual-Core 2.9 GHz LGA 1151
Memory:   Patriot Signature Line 4GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM
PSU:          CORSAIR HXi Series HX1200i 1200W 80 PLUS PLATINUM
SSD:          Patriot Flare 2.5" 60GB SATA III Internal SSD
GPUs:        (4x) GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 Ti DirectX 12 GV-N107TGAMING-8GD 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5

Software:
OS:            Ubuntu 18.04
Miner:        Claymore's Duel Miner
mining Ethereum only

Total hashpower 107.19 Mh

Now for the power, the nvidia-smi command reads each card pulling ~ 141W (then x4 total should be 564 W)

I've got the rig plugged into a Floureon Power Meter, in a 120V outlet, the total draw of the rig is showing ~755 W

Thoughts?

That is because the 755 W is the total your rig is consuming not only the cards. And just for you to know, Linux uses 5% more energy than the Windows OS in mining, yes it is a thing where Linux is behind.

That is the reason why your power meter reads 755 W and I think this is a much normal power consumption in a rig with 4 Gtx 1070 cards.

Linux uses 5% more power consumption?? lol wow

and yeah I know there is more power draw than just the cards, I just wasn't expecting it to be so much.

For comparison my 6x 1070ti, 1x 1050ti (used as video ouput) consumes 960w on average at the wall on win10.

Also, you know that nvidia-smi is not 100% accurate right? Its just an estimate.

If your only mining ETH-hash, for some strange reason with 1070tis?, then you really need to lower your power down to about 110w-115w using SMI. You'd be better off using Windows 10 and NV Inspector. I've gotten my 1070tis as low as 95w mining ETH-hash. Try HiveOS if you just have one rig and want to use Linux. It's free for up to 3 rigs.

I think you can decrease your power draw by decreasing the fan speed and reducing the clock and little mclock in MSI burner.
This is only for ethereum mining I never tried any Alternative OS just playing the MSI burner you can down a bit your power draw by 5% if you can decrease your fan speed a little and changing your TDP but expect for a little decrease of the hashrate but it is more efficient compared to pushing your card to high hashrate but paying more electricity bill.

I've got the rig plugged into a Floureon Power Meter, in a 120V outlet, the total draw of the rig is showing ~755 W

Thoughts?

Lets make simple calculations: 755W from outlet. PSU power efficiency is about 90%. So 755*0.9 ~ 680W. Your CPU TDP is 51W. With other hardware components it could give about 100W.
And finally your 564 + 100 = 664 / 0.9 gives about 750 W from outlet. Everything right.

I don't have my 1070 ti any longer but this perfomance seems a bit low.
My 5 evga 1070 ti's sc were doing around 159 Mh with a power draw of somewhere in the 680 watt range if i remember correctly. Might have been the 600 watt range but didn't go higher than 700 watts. But yeah i really liked the performance of those cards you should be able to dial them in real nice.

As far as I know nvidia-smi provides just an estimate. There is some way where you can reduce the power draw. I think decreasing power to 110w might be helpful.

For your configuration, energy consumption is very large! And a very small hash rate! Your 1070 should give a minimum of 31Mn - 4 * 31 = 124! The power consumption of your system should be ~ 110-115W per card! All this of course, given the correct settings.

First of all the Nvidia-emi is not completely accurate, it is an estimate. 755 W is the total consumptions not just the cards. And you have to take into account Linux uses 5% more energy when mining in comparison to windows os. with all that being said it is pretty normal all things considered.

I don't know where you are getting this information from, but we have received multiple reports that ZhashOS which is a pendrive based Micro Linux where it's total size is less than 1 GB and loads completely into ram on boot is using 70-110 watts LESS than windows.

It is probably because CPU utilization is under 3-4% most of the time with this OS and it needs ZERO virtual memory so it is not hammering on a hard drive swap file. Actually, it doesn't even need a hard drive at all which saves a few bucks on the "Total Cost of Ownership" of your rigs.

Here is a tweet from firstminingrig showing power meter results: https://twitter.com/firstminingrig/status/1010449787802484736?s=19

So please don't consider all Linux's to be power inefficient. It can be VERY efficient when it is built to be. Which is what we focused on with ZhashOS. It is also why Linux is very popular in the commercial / Industrial embedded control market. And why Android and iPhone are foundational derivatives of it.

We are getting ready to provide release 3 (release candidate is out now) which will be a HUGE improvement in setup time and ease. We have received a #zhashos discord post that one first time user was mining in around 2 minutes after initial boot.

Here is the Bitcoin Talk discussion forum for other details and a screen shot of it in operation: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4481713.msg40261859#msg40261859

ZhashOS is currently providing the asic resistant equihash miners such as EWBF, miniZ,gminer and bminer. Though bminer can also mine ethash.

I hope this clarifies the Linux power efficiency concerns.

To be clear on the 2 minute setup. I think the first time user was "testing" it on a single GPU pc before he put it on his rig. But he was amazed on how quick he got it mining. Here is his quote he DM'd me in discord:

I will comment!

Dude.....
Setup on my 1050ti took like 2 min...
Most of the work was changing the mining algo line....
I will use it for BTCz, once price start picking up, but for now, at $0.33 kWh. I can better mine Zel and buy BTCz;
Oh, right, It's mining Zelcash for now..

Overdrive5Last Tuesday at 12:20 PM
So I think you can mine Zelcash with ewbf. Right? Wow 2 minutes! That's gotta be a new user record!

TrollHodlrLast Tuesday at 12:21 PM
no experience with linux since 25Y...
Yeah, it's mining Zelcash now

Also FYI,

70 Watts x 24 hours x 30.4 days= 51,072 watt hours (51 kwh)

51kwh x .145kwh = $7.39 per month.

As of this mornings whattomine mining earnings our fee is estimated to be ~$0.23 per 1070 ti per full mining month.

So this is a "Money Good" decision and we definitely earn our keep for you with the savings.

Here are some estimates for the other GPU's

1050ti: .09
1060: .14
1070: .22
1080: .24
1080ti: .33

What's your fan speed? If.it's above 65 your wasting energy and need a better cooling setup environment.

Also you should run 240 volts to further save on energy.

In all due respect Cairbarreira, You can not categorically "claim" Linux uses 5% more energy. I have provided photographic evidence from a disinterested third party that ZhashOS which IS a Linux based OS is using LESS power than windows on the same rig right here:

https://twitter.com/firstminingrig/status/1010449787802484736?s=19 (https://twitter.com/firstminingrig/status/1010449787802484736?s=19)

I can claim this because ZhashOS loads itself into a ram drive therefor needs much less CPU utilization to operate and has ZERO need for virtual memory and therefor is not hammering on a hard drive swap file continuously. As a side note because ZhashOS is loaded into a ram drive, it doesn't even need a hard drive and application loading and general running is much much faster than hard drive based operating systems.

Answer me this.... IF Linux uses more power than windows, Why are the hundreds of millions of "battery powered" smartphones using Android or iPhone which is foundationaly based on the Linux platform instead of windows phone OS? Wouldn't the customers DEMAND the manufacturers use the most efficient OS and give their business to whoever did?
