Interesting interview here with an Economist and fellow at MIT Connection Science.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/lawrencewintermeyer/2018/10/26/the-role-of-cryptocurrencies-in-future-society/#15809c17787d

"Speaking of the internet, if you look at the crypto space from an Innovation Studies perspective, I think it's the most exciting segment within emerging tech (more than AI, AR/VR, etc) because of its potential to transform business as we know it, our interactions (social or economic) and the pace and direction of economic change. Only this time, the internet infrastructure already exists, unlike the early days of the internet, for a new infrastructure technology like blockchain to piggyback on and gain traction much faster than the internet did. It’s this creative destruction that I am most excited about."

I actually think that AI, AR and VR are just as important and influential in transforming business and social interaction. I consider this to be the necessary technological infrastructure to support a digital economy.

Why?

"With the invention of the internet and all that it has enabled, we are witnessing a steady transition away of value embedded in physical assets to value created by digital assets."

If digital assets are becoming more valuable than physical, more efficiently accessing and dealing with digital assets will be of the utmost importance.

I don't see how VR  or AR can transform the economy. Sure it can give it a boost by with industry profits, but it doesn't mean it's going to "transform" it. Not the same as if VR/AR would be a direct factor of the economy. AI will on the other side have its side of job.

Well VR and AR has a lot of implementations and its just not limited to gaming and entertainment. For one, med students, alongside research and other science stuff could employ the help of these tools for better understanding of models, which, IMO is also a viable niche market. Though it's true that it can't really transform the economy that much but then it'll still add some figures in the end. As for AI, well, there'll be tons of application for the said tech, ranging from entertainment to logistics, programming, data admin etc., you name it. AI will be a massive transformation if we ever perfect the said technology, but then again it's still a grey area and a lot of people are concerned about its negative implications because of watching too much sci-fi movies.

It takes a long time to achieve, and it may take 20 years. VR and AR are ultra-deep technologies with long development prospects. Now it is still the information age, when AR and VR fully landed will enter the era of virtual information. This is a bit close to the mythical god.

This seems more like a game. Having AI as npc which creates a challenge for you because thanks to machine learning the computer controlled characters in the game definitely can learn what you do and react to it.

For example, in sports games such as NBA 2K when you are playing against the computer controlled team and do something couple times in a row they readjust to it and defend it better each time. Which means you can't keep doing the same thing over and over again.

VR on the other hand is still improving a lot, there are now stuff that helps you smell or feel the place you live and even building that clothing that will make you feel everything in the movie "ready player one" which will be amazing. All that combined with crypto could definitely build a new entirely different world and could definitely be an escape from reality for all of us.

No way crypto is bigger than AI, AI had a ton of money and people behind it, combined with decades of research, and it is already being used in many places. In comparison, crypto looks like just an enthusiast project. Crypto is in direct competition with traditional payment methods, and it's not always winning yet. Now compare it with AI which has no competition because it's a completely novel field. Crypto is more of an alternative to mainstream economy rather than something that will change it.
