What is The POP Network?

The POP Network is a blockchain-based video platform that rewards content creators and provides ad-free experiences for viewers. With decentralized video storage and peer-to-peer streaming, The POP Network aims to eliminate reliance on 3rd party distributors and hosting platforms. The POP Network removes the need for advertisers from digital entertainment by enabling transactions in micropayments directly between creators and viewers and empowers both to earn rewards for their contributions. You can even earn POP as a BitTorrent streaming node!

PopChest.com is the first site built atop The POP Network. Based in Los Angeles, the team behind this project has industry veterans from NBCUniversal, Sony, Warner Brothers and more. Investors include backers of Coinbase, Tezos, Robinhood among many others. The POP Network is currently deployed on Ethereum testnet and is slated to hit mainnet before the end of the year.

How does it work?

The POP Network depends on two core decentralization functions: Payments and Video. Since there is no advertising on the site, video monetization happens through microtransactions. Our platform uses Ethereum State Channels for highly efficient, scalable payments. Value is locked up in a smart contract and transmitted every time you watch a video WITHOUT NEEDING TO WRITE BACK TO THE BLOCKCHAIN. This off-chain system is known as a "Layer 2" solution.

The videos themselves live on the BitTorrent network and are accessed directly through the video player using WebTorrent. As the network evolves, open-source nodes may be able to serve video on behalf of the network and earn POP tokens as a reward.

Throughout the year we've done extensive testing. On YouTube, advertising-based earnings may typically be $1.00 per 1000 views. Now you must understand that doesn't mean "views of the video", it means "views of the ads in front of the video". With ad-blockers and since not all views have a commercial, realistically earnings are closer to $0.50 per 1000 or $0.0005 pre view. So, if our microtransaction system charges 1 POP and that's worth half a penny, then the content creator is making 10X YouTube earnings. Yes, it's pretty amazing!
