That would exactly be how cryptos are supposed to work IMO.
It can't be too hard to base the new wallet at least on the same type of private keys so they still work in later versions meaning existing/old funds can always be recovered in the new wallet.

As a wallet operator, it is your duty to keep up with development.
If you lack the skill, you are often encouraged to stay on a web wallet, which requires zero skill from the user other than to send/receive.

This is also a very serious update, hardforks are not something everyone wants to deal with.
So sending to an exchange is something the average user would do since doing it locally requires some computer skills.
You can still do it yourself but it would be a lot more difficult; most don't understand how HF's work.
We are going to go on a whole new wallet; soft forks usually only require a wallet update.

Now, we are going to a whole new wallet entirely, the old wallet will become unusable; process of a hard fork.
This is not an easy, brainless process for most, so using an exchange is the fastest, easiest way for most to do it.
Investors don't like screwing around with it, nerds can do it on their own.

I DO NOT advocate doing it yourself but if anyone is so adamant on not letting Btrex do it, be ready to spend some coin or learn.
If you lack computer skills, it's not worth it and playing with 6-7 figures is not something the average investor wants to risk on.

If you do not possess the skill to do it, it is your duty to find someone who can; BitTrex being the easiest/cheapest solution.
Other than that you can spend a lot of time learning how to do it or spend thousands to pay for a professional to do it.

Don't panic!!!

The new wallet won't overwrite the old one!!
You will likely have to download the whole chain again.
Unless the chain has been reset, then you don't need to download the whole chain.
in essence, there will be two coins but the former will be destroyed so to say.
It is a completely new wallet, not compatible with the former one.
