I invested in several ICOs last year, some are doing better than others but what I learned most of all is that it doesn't seem worth investing in a coin or token at ICO stage, even with the bonuses. Without fail I watched in horror as the price plummeted once the coin was listed, and none of them have recovered. Don't get me wrong, I'm intending to hold for a long time, I'm not a dumper, but I do think that it's better value to wait for the initial price spike then buy once the price stabilizes a little, more than likely at well below ICO price. In my experience, it's better value to do this.

Of course, Bitcoin is the granddaddy of all crypto. At some point I see a consolidation of coins and tokens (my opinion, I could be wrong but how sustainable is 000's of coins all with unique use cases?) but the established core will remain. These seem to me to be the best ones to invest in as part of a long term strategy. You are absolutely right to keep a cash reserve and I would build this up further; maybe a 60/40 crypto/cash split or even 70/30 if your risk appetite is strong, but if you get in a hole at least you have plenty of ready cash to fall back on.

I don’t know if you do follow up with any of these technical analysis, like on Cointelegraph.com, they do analysis, mainly on the top ten cryptocurrencies in the market. The problem with the "promising and well trusted coins" is that they can fall hard if anything changes for the worse. Or even if nothing bad happens to the coin itself, a new project might contest them and do the same things in a better way, resulting in people living the "old and trusted coin" for the newer and arguably better one.
If you invest in middle-valued coins, the chances of going up or down will be about the same but you stand to win more on the way up.

For example Ethereum is already very high, I don't expect it to go 10x times up.
On the other hand, ARK is very cheap and it's utilities could be used to replace Ethereum in the future. It can go 100x times up and still be half of Ethereum's value.

Anyone can do more than one thing, with 1000 dollars to spend on crypto every month anyone can do a lot of things, try a lot of things, and in all that every person will find something that is good for him. Currently I really wouldn't invest heavily in cryptocurrency, I will but not that much I will focus on other investment areas but will divide it into long term and Short term investment where I would put my cryptocurrency investment in my long term investment. I know that site, it's quite good but I feel that most times,  we can't be too sure of other cryptocurrency aside Bitcoin. Even estimated price of other cryptocurrency can still be uncertain.
I invested in few top altcoins and Bitcoin, I'm not regretting that I did. And I'm holding all.  But if I have more opportunities now; I will buy more Bitcoin for the future but not altcoins. Some cryptocurrency developers are sometimes not being sincere.

Exactly, I mean you don't need to look at other crypto right now.

Of course there are shitcoins and altcoins for pump-and-dump purposes, that is if you get lucky and enter at the right moment.

But if you wanted to be just a HODLer and invest your $1k monthly and wait for a good returns in 1-2 years then definitely, bitcoin is the best crypto investment, no matter what people are going to say about it.
