Altcoins is a general name and it already known by people that altcoins are the next after bitcoin so I think you need to specify any coin you are trying to talk about and not just talk in general but many of the altcoins will die with no time but the stronger one will survive.

Well if I need to specify any coin I would say DeepOnion :-)  after all this coin has shown steady development without asking investors money at the beginning like other projects. Investors will buy it once they feel the project has future and when they have used DO features.

This is really an interesting question . A lot of factors are actually at play here . Government have a lot of role to play abd with government near belligerence it will actually take a lot of time to make altcoins popular  

Indeed the challenge for governments is huge, so big that perhaps they won't be able to catch the speed of promising blockchains like bitcoin, but if they do... good for them! the point of blockchain is about decentralizing everything and we know that the governments are not in that frequency or don't have that mentality yet... they are way far behind from the efficient and transparent technology like blockchain.

Want to make cryptocurrency popular I think there are some problems to solve!
1. The way cryptocurrency is circulated, we all know that the current cryptocurrency transaction must be generated through exchange (the process of converting cash into cryptocurrency), and the elderly and children cannot do this!
2. Encrypted currency wallet, we know that most mobile wallets can't store bitcoin and altcoin at the same time!
3. Security, because the cryptocurrency is stored on the Internet, we may be hacked for various reasons!

For point 3 that can happen when people trust online centralized exchanges like Coinbase, ect. but not for decentralized exchanges or when people use hardware wallets like trezor, ledger, etc. as long as the user knows how to keep their private key, they are ok.

For point 1, humans are capable to learn and evolve. Technology gets better every year, education can be reached to everyone!

There are some factors that help determine the popularity of coins like performance, publicity, positive news, campaigning, speculation etc. There are two ways to earn popularity either through positive ways or negative ways. Many coins have become popularity just they are listed on exchanges. Cardano to name a few. Good and promising coins will become popularity even in the short span of time.
