I was thinking, wouldn't it be better if this forum would be decentralized? This forum is made for the Bitcoin fanatics who support the decentralized technology.

Imagine users getting auto-banned when they use certain keywords. People who have posted interesting good quality topics get merits based on the replies of all users, or users can vote whether a topic is good/ bad and the author receives merits based on that. A decentralized exchange implemented in bitcointalk. Or when a user gets many bad feedback from others he will get auto-banned.

The use cases are unlimited, forums need to be decentralized. If we want information or fiat to be decentralized in real life then atleast decentralize where everything started, on this forum. Let the users decide.

What is your opinion?

Are you still new to this current generation of Bots?
This would massively be abused by alt accounts and bots... I think the system is so far so good. Culprits who try to misuse merit are most spotted by the community... Break no rules and you will fit in here perfectly

Can you tell me what extra advantage this forum would have over its current state if it got "decentralized"?

Will not repeat what was said above but what do you mean by getting auto-banned when using certain keywords?
So someone saying "thank you sir" = auto-ban?

Let the users decide.

This basically means "let the ones with most alts" decide.

Not going to work. Bad as it is, it would be far worse if it weren't for the "centralized" parts, such as moderation. But as usual when such decentralization suggestions pop up once in a while - feel free to create such a forum and let us know so that we could come over and "stress test" it Smiley

They've existed on Freenet since before Bitcoin existed, and they function pretty well. (Usenet is arguably also a very old form of decentralized forum.) The problem is that:
 - People are too lazy to install software to use a forum.
 - People don't want to be responsible for their own moderation. There are effective ways to do it which aren't manipulable and don't require wading through endless spam, but it's still work which every user must do for themselves. 99.9% of people simply won't do it. (Freenet's FMS inspired bitcointalk.org's trust system. Imagine the forum's trust system, but for moderation instead of trust, and no DefaultTrust.)

So there is essentially no demand. If you built it on the "new hotness" ipfs (which is Freenet but much worse... and I'm not a fan of Freenet's design), then maybe you'd get a bit of attention for a while, but it'd eventually fade.

No, they would only get auto-banned when they say specific words which can only be used as an insult.
For example: idiot, faggot, fuck you, gay, motherfucker, nazi and others..

No one gets auto banned for trolls in here, it's against the rules somewhat, but usually no action other than to delete the thread or the reply is taken,if you can refer us to a situation were someone was banned for that then we could discuss about it.

A decentralized forum just wouldn't work, it'll turn this place into a mess in no time, this forum isn't stringent with rules,so I don't see why you're complaining,as long as you don't plagiarise, there is a 90% chance you wouldn't get banned
And you wouldn't get red tagged if you don't sell or buy accounts, not so hard to abide by

You can only fix what is broken.

Let the users decide.

The forum is governed by set rules and guidelines which are available for all to see, letting the users decide or putting decisions down to majority vote in sensitive topics would be difficult to manage, and it would be down to the majority account holders.
Or the forum staffs draws up an algorithm which moderates the system and keeps it in check.

This would make the forum so sort of parliament and there would be a real war of opinion some that might be purely bias

also it would eliminate the work of the moderator and also the work of the merit sources which to me sounds weird because of the near perfect work those two entity has put in.

You don't expect there to be a peaceful forum when every decision is made by voting there would surly be some undue clash of opinion and most time we would be deviating from the forum ethics and start to be come a sort of political parties compilation.

This is not to say the forum do not give regards to the opinion of its members, it actually does that why you have the report to mods button, ignore button and this meta section where you can air your views

So you want to ban people for saying they're gay? That's a terrible thing to automate!
Insults are different for everyone. TMAN for instance likes to call people "princess". If you can't say "motherfucker" everybody still knows what you mean when you type "mohterfucker". Someone else can get insulted by boy bands.
If you get insulted by crap you read online, you need to get a different hobby.

Too early for such a drastic measure.
I fully support decentralized communities like Steemit, Memo.cash and others, but I don't think decentralizing this forum is worth it for the time being.
I'd actually prioritize a better UI and faster load times

Not everything needs to be decentralised just because bitcoin is, but feel free to create your own forum. I think a decentralised forum would be a good experiment but you would quickly see how inefficient it would be. The only way I'd see it working is basically you become your own moderator with banning or ignoring users rather than mods doing the work, but those actions don't effect any one else unless maybe they trust your actions and they add you to some sort of trust list, but do you really want to spend half your time ignoring or banning trolls, spammers and bots all for the sake of decentralisation?

I was thinking, wouldn't it be better if this forum would be decentralized? This forum is made for the Bitcoin fanatics who support the decentralized technology.

Imagine users getting auto-banned when they use certain keywords.

This doesn't sound decentralised to me. Bitcointalk also uses miners and blockchain. Should the forum be hosted on a blockchain and all posts have to be confirmed by miners? Maybe you have to pay a fee every time you post?

Will not repeat what was said above but what do you mean by getting auto-banned when using certain keywords?
So someone saying "thank you sir" = auto-ban?

This certainly isn't decentralised. This sounds overly authoritarian and repressive. People shouldn't be banned for saying fuck, nazi or gay. What if you're having a discussion about fucking gay rights in Nazi Germany? Thrice damned?  Grin

People only want rights and power, but no obligation.

Let's try to imagine a decentralized forum. Who is going to pay for it? There are costs in running a forum. If the forum goes well, it will be lucrative, however it has some costs to be running.

People know bitcoin is decentralized, and then think that everything should be. That's make no sense. A global cryptocurrency is important to be decentralized because it cannot be shut down neither controlled. As many people will have reasons to try to shut it down or control it. But a decentralized forum?  A forum is like a business, someone needs to control and manage it.

I will not agree to this because other users had so many account that could use to give you negative feedback and will definitely banned you for that reason and for sure you will not going to like it. THe system now for the forum works better and it will be upgraded with the new forum to be introduce in the near future. Let us just wait and see the new forum's update for cryptocurrency discussions.

Well it would probably work like bticoin or bit torrent and there isn't once central authority, but as theymos said, everyone would have to download the client and everyone would share hosting. I like the intention behind a decentralised forum, but it almost certainly wouldn't work very well. It would basically be what this forum would be like if there were no mods at all. Whilst less moderation is generally good, we can also see the problem that arises when mods take a back seat. Spammers and plagiarisers would run rife and the burden is left up to each individual user to moderate which would quickly become tedious. At least mods get paid something for their troubles here but users under a decentralised forum would have to do it for free and I'm sure they'd quickly grow tired of it. Imagine if every user had to nuke every spam bot they saw. You'd probably spend more time 'moderating' what you saw than you would in actual posting.
