Since I've never seen any spam on this forum related to spam or IRC, you seem to be the only one spamming here.

Post about vague topic (you're assuming anyone here uses IRC in the first place)? Check.

Post includes link to random site? Check.

Link source is hidden? Check.

If you're not aware you look like a spammer, allow me to demonstrate how to post about spammers correctly.

Not much of a demonstration, but I applaud you for the attempt. I made a reference, to an obscured site, the link itself was spread through IRC. A paltry warning for the community.

I frequent IRC servers such as freenode and lately I have been getting a whole lot of random private messages from random username with stupid links inside of them. Why is this such a popular method of spam these days?

Today I got a message that looked like this.

Quote

When you click on that link, it takes you to a stupid pointless blog site called "Star Stocks" which is some Stock report blog (resolves to http://starstockhub.com/).

^^^^^ The above post doesn't look like spam itself. ^^^^^^

Your post lead me to believe it was just spam on its own.

To answer your question, I believe that there is lots of spam on IRC because (as far as I know) IRC hasn't changed in ages, including necessary changes in IRCd's to stop spamming.

If it's in a channel, the ops are responsible to control spammers. If it's a private message, the provider (in the above example, freenode) would need to have some kind of a vetting process for thousands of users to verify that they are not all spammers (which would be nearly impossible). The best they can probably do is just ban spammers harassing and spamming other users (which they actually do when you report them to the admins if their TOS doesn't allow spam).

The details are appreciated, I personally wasn't willing to click on a link that contained possible malware. But thank you for your heroics, I am sure many members of this community will applaud your bravery.

So you're not willing to click on your own link?

No way, I found it in the IRC. Unless you know exactly where a link through IRC is coming from you would be a fool to click on it.

So why did you put a link from IRC on the forums then?  I fail to see the point of this whole thread.

A simple warning, figured the mere agknowledgement of this link would give people the knowledge to just say no, on the clicking of it.
