Cryptopia Hacked:

Source:

https://twitter.com/Cryptopia_NZ/status/1085084168852291586
its really bad news for crypto community.i am worry in couple days after hacker get any token in their wallet they will dumped it in any markets.just preventing if in few days later price crashing again.
Any exchange hacks is really always been a bad news on the entire community. This can really create a panic which would drive the entire market to dip down the prices again.
Sorry for those users who are being affected with this.Luckily i did able to pull out my funds with Cryptopia a long time ago when i do observed that they are gradually having lots of wallet maintenances.

The amount of stolen Bitcoins is very high, it's a lot of money, some advices, do not enter into paranoid mode, just follow common sense:

  • How to save your Bitcoin

- Last Updated official OS + Antivirus
- Not download movies..., videos, games, compromised pages...
- Clear browser cache.
- Everything connected by cable, outside wireless keyboard, wireless mouse and wifi printer.
- Activate 2FA + Backup (Exchange).

  • Wallets

- Software: Bitcoin Core, download in official page, encrypt wallet.dat + backup.
- Hardware: Buy in manufacturer's page, Trezor, Ledger, Keepkey, just install manufacturer firmware updates.
- Paper: Paper Walet generate the offline address.
- Cryptosteel: backup private key or seed.
- All backups outside of the computer.

  • Phishing

- Not accept links, mails, social networks to exchange, update wallets or firmware.
- Attention to web addresses and domain extension.
Securing our coins is relatively easy but many do not want to believe that they will get hacked, they think they are safe just because they think they have never being hacked and then when they get hacked they regret that they did not took precautions that could have protected their coins for almost no cost or in the case of hardware wallets for an affordable price.

Anyone know the name of that Polish exchange that didn't really get hacked but for some reason they kept all the bitcoins on their site in a wallet.dat file which they hosted on an AWS and somebody accidentally erased the virtual machine and they learn't the hard way to keep a backup on hand.

I think what happened was another exchange, might of been MtGox ended up covering the deposits and took over their exchange. This was sometime in 2011 or 2012 or so.

I opened a thread a few months back with a study on the Exchanges's security. They're far to be "safe" they have a lot of things to do to protect its users. Some aren't even protected for basics points.
People are learning the lesson (often too late) we keep repeating over and over again. An exchange isn't the right place to store your coins, store the minimum

Seriously it is so weird that even before this post got to a lot of messages we had another hacking. I mean what does these websites do for security ? I mean I know hackers are getting better and better everyday and whenever you defend some way of hacking they find another way of hacking but you really need to consider cold wallet as a big number versus hot wallet.

Even bitcointalk got hacked at one point through the avatars we had, think about how canny you had to be at hacking to figure out how to hack someone from your avatar. Hence, I understand difficulty of not getting hacked but even if hacking is unavoidable than find a way to minimize the losses in a hacking attempt, just protect as much as you can while giving them something to say they hacked it. That way they will have some small hot wallet amount whereas you protect most of the coins.

That's what we afraid of. The hackers for sure will dump the coins they have someday which can impact the price movement if the number is huge enough. Frankly, idk why exchanges look so weak even though there are already several bad examples from the past.

There will be an impact but it's not huge for sure, cryptopia is not a big exchange so this will not significantly affect investors in the entire crypto world.
Frankly, idk why exchanges look so weak even though there are already several bad examples from the past.
Small exchanges are most likely susceptible to hacking because their system is weak, and that's the reason why they did not improve despite existing already in the market. I also have deposit on that site but I don't put a lot as I know someday things like this might happen.

With this news, it's a lesson for everyone not to trust our money to small exchange, instead put it on big exchanges as they have better security.

Anyone know the name of that Polish exchange that didn't really get hacked but for some reason they kept all the bitcoins on their site in a wallet.dat file which they hosted on an AWS and somebody accidentally erased the virtual machine and they learn't the hard way to keep a backup on hand.

You talking about Bitomat?

Quote
On 26 July 2011 at about 11:00 PM, I noticed that bitcoin server was out of resources and I had to increase RAM. As a result of this operation, the virtual machine was deleted and all data lost, including bitcoin wallet and its backups.

I have established that data was lost because settings of the virtual machine were changed, although I didn’t change them myself. Amazon Web Services Company, which hosts our servers, says that the cleared machine has been set up to be irretrievably destroyed (including the data on the disks) at the shutdown.

I’m still trying to establish who has changed the settings and whether I will be able to recover the lost data. Unfortunately cooperation with Amazon Web Services is very difficult. As soon as I realized that my virtual machine was lost I have ordered AWS premium support, talked to the manager and asked for securing of the disk data. So far, without success.

https://siliconangle.com/2011/08/01/third-largest-bitcoin-exchange-bitomat-lost-their-wallet-over-17000-bitcoins-missing/

I think what happened was another exchange, might of been MtGox ended up covering the deposits and took over their exchange. This was sometime in 2011 or 2012 or so.

And yes you're right, it was later acquired by Mt. Gox less than a month after that incident in 2011, crazy times.

With this news, it's a lesson for everyone not to trust our money to small exchange, instead put it on big exchanges as they have better security.
Easier said than done. Smaller exchanges list all the shitcoins larger exchanges don't want to list, so there is always an incentive for people to keep using smaller exchanges, shady or not.

If you also add that larger exchanges will more and more subject their users to KYC/AML requirements, people will have even more incentive to use smaller exchanges, because they don't ask for personal information.

History tells us that after so many hacks and inside jobs, people here will keep making the same mistakes over and over again. It's greed that rules here, which we have to accept unfortunately....

This information is from 6 months ago, it only looks like more FUD, but there is something that I do not like.

This does not give confidence, in the query page you can know if your data is included in the list...

On the page you can check your information.
Do not verify the email address, the page can save your address in the database as active, then the hackers start working.
Change your passwords, use different passwords for each important exchange or service.

Remember to change the passwords in x time.

I also trade about cryptopia and this is a good news for me to avoid hacking those exchanges that I was already traded. But in twitter cryptopia was notef everybody about their issues looking forward from it.
