Wow, the U.S. patent system is completely dysfunctional up if that patent is accepted. They are basically patenting the act of selling digital goods and currencies online.

Here is the abstract:

Quote
In various example embodiments, a system and method for managing transaction in a digital marketplace are provided. In example embodiments, a transaction request involving a digital good is received. A determination as to whether the transaction involves a purchase of the digital good is performed. Based on the transaction involving the purchase of the digital good, a further determination as to whether an overlap in inventory or a related item involving the digital good exists is performed. Based on the overlap in inventory existing, a sub-collection of the inventory is created with which to complete the transaction request. Based on existence of the related item, a combination package including the digital good and the related item is created and offered in response to the transaction request.

Allow me to translate:

We receive your order and we see if we have any in stock. If we do, we sell it to you. Also, if we have any combo deals involving the item you want, we might try to  sell you the combo deal instead.

Most software patents are absurd, but I would say this is really positive news, because it means they are potentially positioning themselves to get involved in bitcoin, or to make an official single way to purchase bitcoins with Paypal without relying on a third party, which is riddled with problems.

Companies like Paypal are forced to play this absurd patent war game to protect their corporate asses, it's an unfortunate circumstance but it's the only way to level the playing field and protect against unscrupulous patent trolls.

It's already well-established that the U.S. patent system is completely dysfunctional.  This is not unique to the U.S. though, patent laws in general around the world have been very slow to adapt to the reality of contemporary technology, and how best to be innovative, especially when it involves software.  Where once it protected innovation, now it is actually stifling it!

If *they* is eBay -----no--- as the article and the filing both state
eBay filed the application back on December 29th, 2011

eBay is in fact an early adopter/tinkerer of Bitcoin
