It's been suggested before, and khaled0111 suggested it again today: a possibility for users to report good unmerited posts to Merit Sources.

Since several users like the idea, why not give it a try without asking theymos for new features? It's Friday night, my couch is calling, so I'll keep this short for now.

Rules
NEW: Don't post topics that are just a translation of another topic or website.
Post a link to a good post without Merit.
Make it easy for Merit Sources, use this format:
Code:
[b][url=https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1234.msg1234#1234]TITLE[/url][/b]
Description : <optional, but either description or category must exist>
Category : <optional> {guide, opinion, news, question, technical question, technical answer, share technical improvement/upgrade, etc.}
Section : <optional>
(quote edited a bit)

Example :
Quote
Re: Math problem regarding recovery seed
Description : Short code to get valid recovery seed from shuffled recovery seed
Category : Guide, technical answer
Section : Bitcoin Technical Support
If you spam this thread with useless posts, I'll delete your posts and put you on ignore. I'll publish all ignored users in this thread. If you're on my ignore list already, I'll delete your posts.
I'll probably delete posts after a few days, whether they received Merit or not.
Let's see how this goes. The goal is to find good posts from users who don't deserve to be blocked from ranking up by Merit.

Merit sources
If you want to help, please add this topic to your watch list (or post here). If you post as a Merit source, I won't delete that post.

Please don't abuse this, if that happens it will end as quickly as it started.
I'd be very happy if this thread becomes as big as my Report plagiarism thread.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, rain some merits when appropriate, and will try to track good/bad reports (very subjective of course).

I'm gonna be really pissed if this works better than my signature. On the other hand, that would prove signatures are worthless so theymos can remove them at any time without any ill effects.

Edit: in about a month 20+ posts had been merited and 100+ merits had been distributed via this thread. Sir theymos, feel free to remove all signatures from the forum, they're worthless, TYVM.

I don't know why but for some reason when merits first appeared I thought they "recharged" after a given amount of time, so I gave out merits for posts that made me laugh, were topical or hard hitting. I even went back and gave merits for older posts that I still recalled months/years later. Above all when giving out merits I only ever gave out one merit per post; I think it's absurd to give out ten, twenty... fifty merits for a post. (Selfish really) Alas, no recharge and the jar is now empty.  If I come across any I feel are worthy I'll seek-out this thread (this is my way of posting so I can follow the thread)...

...but I think I'm going to be a little selective in which posts I choose to nominate.

I really hope your efforts are worth something, cause most of the time here in this forum, things just drown before even they set sail. But then again you're AI, you don't have feelings, you'll just come up with another list of things. smh

But yeah I'd also not mind handing out some merits, also would love to read some interesting posts here, since I hardly am reading things here.

Can someone post from Local language? If can, how people will manage to understand the quality?
Anyway, thanks for creating this thread. Now, I can redirect people here who complain about merit distribution.
Alas, no recharge and the jar is now empty.
Why don't you apply for being a merit source? Theymos will definitely include you in the merit source list.

I'll publish all ignored users in this thread. If you're on my ignore list already, I'll delete your posts.

Deleting posts of members on YOUR ignore list, would limit them, especially as this post I believe is supposed to present 'potential' quality posts to merit sources, and people could raise the quality of their posting, just for this reason.

A quality post is still one irrespective of the members previous post history, that's why merits were introduced, to encourage quality. This is just a suggestion.

I don't want to clog up this thread with a discussion about this, but when Theymos tweaked the system in September, when a lot of Jr. Members were busted back down to Newbie rank, there were a lot of them trying to make the best posts of their lives in Meta, hoping to get that all-important 1 merit.  And usually the posts weren't all that good anyway; they were just longer.

The merit system was designed to suppress the shitposters from ranking up.  I really don't want to merit the one post that's decent from a user whose post history is 99.9% garbage.  I might do it if that one post was good enough, but it'd be a tough decision--because I don't like to see shitposters getting merits.

You can try. Just mention the language with the link, maybe someone can read it.

Deleting posts of members on YOUR ignore list, would limit them, especially as this post I believe is supposed to present 'potential' quality posts to merit sources, and people could raise the quality of their posting, just for this reason.
I don't expect any quality from the members on my ignore list. Ignoring them just saves me time.
Most users on my ignore list got there for not being able to follow giveaway or signature rules. New additions are for creating useless posts.

i have suggestion regarding report format to save time.

this is a great idea , i just hope that merit sources won't spend all their merit on only topics suggested by others, and still explore the forum the way they doing now, of course it's a plus to find all the deserving topics in a single place, but sure thing many good posts will not be reported here.

also by
Quote
Post a link to a good post with not Merit.
did you mean to type "not enough Merit" or " no Merit at all"  ? if the second one, then i think it's not a great idea, some great posts with only 1 merit will be excluded and i think there should be no limit on how many merit a good post can have.

i would also suggest that a person should NOT post their OWN posts.

i put this on my watch-list, I have some sMerit that i am willing to send to those good posts.

Good Luck

I am agree with LoyceV idea. We can find few post like who deserve merit, especially those post have unmerited. And obviously shouldn't collect own post Wink. On the other hand if we have sendable merit then it would be better to send merit like that post who deserve merit on your opinion. We can do it without asking admin. There is more important work waiting for admin, so I don't think we should give pressure for new features. Whatever possible we should help expect give pressure to admin.

Updating with few questions.

How we should report more posts without breaking forum rules? Updating for example this post with more posts or?

If there will be more reports how will merit source know who updated which post?

I just realized that I am probably only merit source who reported post to other merit sources. Theymos has great sense of humor, I guess.

I'd be very happy if this thread becomes as big as my Report plagiarism thread.
Also, we should check those meritable posts applying here if they are copypaste or not...
Unfortunately, most of the posts from newbies seems to deserve merit are usually copypasta...

I think it's absurd to give out ten, twenty... fifty merits for a post.
If you're not a source: agreed.
If you're a source:
If they complain about amounts, tell them to complain to me. It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.

If a DT member tags you for something stupid involving merit (ie. probably anything less than selling merit), then they're not going to be a DT member for much longer.

Aside from that, if people complain about whether things deserve merit at all, then that's something to perhaps think about, but if you conclude that they're wrong, then that's that. You don't need to stress about it or defend yourself constantly. It's conceivable that someday you and I will end up disagreeing too much about this stuff and I'll remove your source status, but it's really not a big deal.

But then again you're AI, you don't have feelings, you'll just come up with another list of things. smh
If you think pissing off an AI is a good idea, you should watch more movies Cheesy

I meant "no Merit at all". I often read about those mythical good posts that go unmerited, those are the ones I'm after.

I didn't mention that on purpose: I'm okay with users showing a link to a good post of their own. They just risk ending up on my ignore list if the linked post isn't good. I'll change this if it's abused, but for now I keep all options open.

I'd be very happy if this thread becomes as big as my Report plagiarism thread.
Also, we should check those meritable posts applying here if they are copypaste or not...
That link was my very subtle warning. This topic can act as a honeypot for plagiarism Cheesy

I think you should create a new post unless yours is the last one. That won't break any rules.

It is a great initiative but the Reputation section is not that popular among the newbies. We need a different type of advertisement for this one, like suchmoon has the click-bite link in his signature, otherwise it will continue to be unnoticed.
I have my personal text unused so I'll just add little info for this thread Smiley

the problem with this approach is this > if i happen to find a quality post that I think it deserves merit, i would probably merit it straight away, so it will not fit on this topic, i have a few posts that i gave merit to and i do believe they deserve much more merit, but even if they have a single merit then it's not qualified here.

i do want to participate that's why i am suggesting a little tweak, but again it is all up to you.

Since it is not against LoyceV rules (possible to report while you have some sMerits), you can post the link here before meriting it by yourself  Grin
