I would like to have a cryptocurrency miner for financial and research purposes and I can not afford one. Is there any way to get one for free?

Old generation miners are pretty cheap..

For research purpose you can try to CPU (or GPU?) mine some unknown altcoin, if you have a desktop computer. Or course, you'll never recover the energy cost of that mining.

Bitcoin mining is more complicated story because the difficulty is very high.

I've just picked up a Butterfly Labs Bitforce SC Orion ASIC miner, and an EVGA 1200 P2 power supply. I got them for nothing when a friend was clearing a garage for somebody. Unfortunately there are no cables with them. The mains "kettle" lead is no problem, and neither is the USB cable. The power cables are presenting difficulties, as the EVGA is modular, and seems to need special cables.

I may throw it up as yet another project here, and see if I can get some advice. An alternative psu for the miner would be useful

You could try going down the same avenue, and putting a request on Freecycle or a similar site. Don't expect to earn anything from this old kit though.

^^
That miner is way before my time lol, I can't even find a spec sheet for it.
Probably more than it's worth at this time - depends on the experience you want but you can order the EVGA cables new here.

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=100-ck-1300-b9

Jet if your seriously interested in doing a little mining check out the 741 package from cryptouniverse. The only accesory you would need is the controller/Rasp Pi.

For OP

Unfortunately nothing in life is truly free. If you want to mine BTC - for financial reasons - you will need to invest some money into the venture. You also need to know that you fully understand what you are getting into.

Here is a good intro
First time/Small miner reference for getting started.

Depending on your electricity costs, even a free miner may not provide you with any income. Apart from that look for older generation gear much like JetCash has come into.
@Steamryme

Thanks for the link. I don't think that mining would be a good commercial proposition for me, but I do want to understand some of the processes. As these are "scrap" items, I'm not sure that I want to invest much money in them. Probably the best thing is to start a blog, and throw up some links to see if I can pick up some circuit diagrams, and connection info.

That's understandable, I do recall this was always more of an informative curiosity for you.

Depending on the level of circuit diagrams or what you really want to know there may be some useful members here. I'll do some reading and fire you out a list of members here who may know or be able to discuss that with you further. In the mean time you may want to consider another attempt at creating a thread in Mining speculation, I only suggest it as you have returned to the board since the last time. Just state that this is to discuss the circuitry of miners themselves. Might actually be an interesting topic to read as I've seen members with a great deal of knowledge drop snipits here and there.
Thanks - I found a post by a member who is still active, and who said he has a pdf of the schematics. That post was made a few months ago, so it may not still be true. I've sent him a pm anyway.

Apologies to the OP for hijacking his thread. If I get anywhere, then I'll post the info, and maybe the OP could try to pick up one of these miners. I suspect they have no value today in view of the (probably) low hash rate.

Alternatively, if you're trying to get something more on the quieter side that's still relatively inexpensive, the Antminer S7LN, S5 and S3(+) models are all pretty quiet. I can find the S3s on eBay for less than $50 including shipping in the United States (click for search link), and S5s should go for a bit higher than that (click for eBay search link). S7LNs are a bit rarer than these two units I've mentioned already, but they're more efficient and faster at hashing than the S5 and S3.
