After seeing tk808 thread yesterday I was happy that many bitcointalk members and merit sources chipped in to help a fellow cryptocurrency enthusiast get some recognition and needed merits towards the rank he desires. We all know that many merit sources rightly avoid and have the whole Altcoin board on ignore and many others don't go there at all. This makes it very difficult for Altcoin enthusiasts like tk808 to get merits, improve his rank and feel appreciated.

tk808 is right when he said:
There's no denying the largest part of Bitcointalk is indeed altcoin discussions, ANNs and the increasingly defunct tokens section. Spam or not, it is the largest and generates the most traffic.

Even though 90% of the posts in the Altcoin sections are worthless there are probably other members just like tk808 that get buried under all that spam that is generated there.

What can we do to change this?
I am hoping that with tk808's help and with the help of some merit sources who have shown that they are willing to merit altcoin content, and all other members who are interested in doing the same we find those worthy of merits in the Altcoin section, make a list and help them feel appreciated.

I am going to PM tk808 and make him aware of this thread and ask him to post some links to users who, just like him, frequent the Altcoin boards and post quality content there. Merit sources can then check their posting history and decide if their posts are merit-worthy or not.

To tk808 I would like to say that you can use those 170+ earned merits from yesterday and merit some users from the Altcoin sections that you think have been overlooked but produce good quality posts.

The 2nd post of this thread will be reserved for the List and I will update it with links to quality posters from the Altcoin boards.

Not against the idea behind this thread but instead of this why not encourage the use of this [self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source when you come across a post worth meriting on the board even though you have merited the post, you can still report it on the thread so merit sources can merit them in their numbers if they find the post worthy of merit. Asking for a list might lead to lower rank user going to hurt for them with the intention of getting rewarded with merits which might lead to spamming since post isn't self moderated.

I don't worry about this much, Merit begging is risky business, it often leads to a ban for plagiarism.

It was also very refreshing to see someone want to become part of the solution, and to go about doing so so quickly. He rapidly created a list of 10 good altcoin posts for his source application, and immediately started redistributing his earned sMerits to good altcoin posts. Contrast this to others in the past who have complained about good altcoin posts going unmerited, but chosen only to complain about the merit system as a whole and personally attack merit sources rather than actually try to help.

I, for one, have no issue meriting good altcoin posts. I have very little enthusiasm to trawl through the pages and pages of complete trash in the altcoin boards, but if someone directs me towards these good posts, I'd be more than happy to send some merit their way.

What can we do to change this?

I can't argue with the idea of giving quality posters merit within the Altcoin section(s) of the forum. I think a more appropriate approach to the situation might be an increase in moderation, post-requirements or rules designed specifically for that section to combat the issue. Chopping through the weeds to find the members that are diamonds in the rough isn't going to make the section any better, in my opinion. This is seemingly more a solution for a very small subset of users within these sections, so that they can pretend like their section is a healthy part of the forum. We should aim towards making that section of the forum more stomach-able, so that the merit distribution happens more naturally and the section becomes the asset it is meant to be (rather than a chaotic mess).

Applying to become a merit-source, as I hear tk808 has done, would probably be the best way for an individual member that is actively participating in the Altcoin section to make it better.

Perhaps it is a time for change. We should not stop users with good post in the altcoin section to deny a chance a reward to be awarded with merits because the user is only posting in the spammy threads or sections. Reminders that most good discussion is found in that section. It is just that there are too many users there and it will give a merit source some hard time looking for a quality post.

Thoug it has been reported already that merit source were already helping in this. This is a better way to gain more crypto enthusiast coming from around the world. It may sound a hard job for the merit source but I guess it is a time already that we should intensify the forum to a much more from being friendly to a much more friendly user approach rather than condemning every negative thoughts and comment about them complaining in the forum. I do believe I am one of them but all change. LOL

Completely agree, but that is a mammoth task. I very rarely report anything in the altcoin boards, because I struggle to see the point. In the time it takes me to make a single report, 10 new spam posts will have been posted. At least when I report in other boards, it feels like I'm making a difference. I'm sure there are many others like me. We need some big top-down changes to start making the altcoin boards usable again - several more mods, much stricter punishments and bans for repeat shitposters and spammers, increasing the merit limit to display a signature, perhaps some sort of reward for good reporters, that kind of thing. Until then, an extra hundred reports here or there will make no noticeable difference unfortunately, and many merit sources and senior members will continue to ignore those boards.

As tk808 has shown, there are some good posts in the altcoin boards which are going unmerited, and so in the meantime it seems more than reasonable to appoint several merit sources who frequent those boards.

Remove bumping incentives. Theymos started the discussion a while ago and the were some good ideas. Hopefully this gets done and reduces the number of shitposting newbies in ANN threads.

Not sure about altcoin discussions. If the problem is sig spam maybe there should be a higher merit requirement on who gets to wear a signature or a sig ban option available to moderators so that they could hand it out much more often than current temp- or perma-bans. Three garbage posts - sig ban for a week.

Not against the idea behind this thread but instead of this why not encourage the use of this [self-moderated] Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source when you come across a post worth meriting on the board
Because i don't browse the Altcoin section so I am not looking for posts there.

Asking for a list might lead to lower rank user going to hurt for them with the intention of getting rewarded with merits which might lead to spamming since post isn't self moderated.
They can try but that wont work. Spammers can easily be found and nobody will award them with anything. They will just get reported since their posting history will be checked.

I, for one, have no issue meriting good altcoin posts. I have very little enthusiasm to trawl through the pages and pages of complete trash in the altcoin boards, but if someone directs me towards these good posts, I'd be more than happy to send some merit their way.
Yes I know, that is why I think it is a good idea to single out some of these good contributors in the altcoin sections and tk808 can help with that since he is there on a daily basis. It seems he has already applied to become a merit source as well, I missed that thread of his, but that is good to know.

If he becomes an Altcoin merit source then this thread will become obsolete and I will lock it but if that doesn't happen I think it can still turn out to be useful.
