I'd say that every coin has it's pros and cons, some are made to get into pump and dump scheme while few coins are really working for the potential that it can show to the community. Don't get blinded with great marketing of some altcoins.

Your suggestion about investing on safe and top coins is true but I wouldn't say that every coin has a potential, just look at the coinmarketcap.com and how many coins were listed there it's around 2,100. That's a lot of altcoins there and that only shows on how many of them doesn't really have the future and potential.

Mass adoption is the major part of crypto must have in order to survive into the market. trading, specially in short term like day trading, is not for everyone. many will lose a lot of money trying it. for most people it is more suitable to do it in a rather longer term and during times where things are very clear. like selling on the top of the bubble then buying back a couple of months later (eg. sell at $18k buy back at $10k).
not to mention that trusting exchanges since they run away, scam, get hacked,... every day is not a choice that everyone makes.

The  hodl simplifies it.  Bitcoin may go up and down but in the long run it will definitely go up.

Well, its also very important to know the perfect time when you should buy because those who bought back in 2017 were definitely most of them beginners. Even tough in 2017  i wasnt very experienced with cryptocurrencies i knew that when the price reached 20.000$ it is not going to continue like that because its just to much and to fast. There is not important to consider when to buy now because the price is down, what you need to know is when you have to enter the market and take the risks.
