What with bitcointalk .COM, it's a bit misleading.

It's the first time when I hear Bitcointalk.com. And I think it's quite strange because .com is considered as main domain on the internet. How someone like Rodger Ver still haven't bought this domain to make real Bitcoin forum

All browser can save your bookmarks as a file and import this file on others pc/browser. You should make this file and save (without saving the cookie and password of course) and upload it in your safe cloud service or google account to safety import it when you need it.

Let's do the math in bitcoin,
1 Bitcoin is around $5,000 now
So the bitcointalk.com domain is rouhtly 13 BTC
I think that 13 BTC won't be a problem for the forum, but I don't know anything about the BTC reserve of the forum
So I think Theymos just didn't wanted to buy that domain yet. (even when BTC was near $20,000 that time the domain name was just a bit more than 3 BTC... good old days )

Safe from what in the first place? Are you hacked? Did you lose access? What do you want to do?

But no, that site is not related to bitcointalk.

Asking for a new password on that site DOES nothing to your account here on bitcointalk. (Unless you give them the same password as that you've set here, in which case they might try to hack you with it (your bitcointalk account). (Is that what you did?)

Sorry my post was unclear. I will clarify. I had a bitcoin question and reigstered with bitcointalk.com.
I know this site is not related to bitcointalk.com now that I have read info on here.
I made a post on there but didn't hear anything, and when I revisited it the post had been removed.
I pm'd the admin on bitcointalk.com and they said it was removed as it was probably spam, which is wasn't.

My first sentence is related to the request for new password on bitcoin.com, because I read this thread over here and got scared. I thought it would be wise to request a new password on bitcoin.com to stop any phishing danger after reading this thread on here.

After requesting the new password for bitcointalk.com I had second thoughts about the idea of requesting a new password for that site, and don't know whether or not to request the new password with the link they provided in case they try to phish me.

Thankfully I  used different passwords for this site and that site.

Would you be able to advise me what to do regarding bitcointalk.com to protect my safety?
For instance, should I ignore their email  in response to my request to reset the password?

If you have different passwords for your account here and bitcointalk.COM you can already not be hacked here. Resetting your password on that site wouldn't make much sense. -- atleast i don't see how it makes sense.

What the people in the OP are talking about is that they accidentally typed in bitcointalk.COM instead of .ORG, and thus had to relogin with their Bitcointalk credentials. (or so they thought.)
To prevent this from happening to you all you have to do is make sure you're on the right domain. Check if it's .ORG and if has the right layout/and or if it's bookmarked.

I guess you could change your password to an enormous long string of characters and numbers. Assuming that the operators of that site are not acting in bad faith ( which i so far have not seen evidence of) one would hope they would store salted hashes of your password (encrypted), and thus even if that site gets hacked, the hackers won't be able to use it anywhere.

If the operators are acting in bad faith, which you seem to suspect-- they already know the current password + email you have set. In which case you need to think twice if you used that password + email on any other sites as well. If so, your best bet would probably be to change the passwords on those sites, and not on Bitcointalk.COM since they already know your password.. (Although it probably won't hurt to also change your password on Bitcointalk.com, but you'd have to assume that everything you change your password to is logged somewhere.)

As long as you have no information on Bitcointalk.com that could reveal your identity, you could probably just let it be.

Bitcoin.com =/= Bitcointalk.com and Bitcoin.com as far as i know isn't malicious in the sense that they steal your passwords, but rather try to sell you stuff you don't actually want.

It doesn't really matter. If you don't reuse your Bitcointalk.com password anywhere else in combination with the email you signed up with to Bitcointalk.com, there is nothing to worry about.

The most they could do with your email if it doesn't have the same password as it has on Bitcointalk.com is to bruteforce it, which is, if your password is longer than ~10 characters, very improbable. If you have something like Authy/2 Step Verification, it becomes impossible.

I always use different usernames and  passwords for each website I visit but I am worried as they have my email.
I have other types of non bitcoin forums that I use the same email for, but the passwords on these sites are diffferent to the one I used for bitcointalk.com.

You should only change your password on sites that use the SAME password as you used on Bitcointalk.com, (which you said, you didn't, so there should be no problem.)

No. Just make sure that when you register on a new site, you use a different password than you used on Bitcointalk.com, that's all.

The website already recorded you register and log in credentials, and if the owners are dubious, they already have access to that information. You should be more interested I'm protecting you accounts on other sites which shares similar password and email (or a combination of any)
To your earlier question about the password reset link, I would advice you do not click on it as, it does not offer any level of protection.

Sorry I typed bitcoin.com in error, I meant that I registered with bitcointalk.com, which is on the list of scam sites in link in my previous post. I registered with bitcointalk.com which is why I am worried.

Just don't use the password / email / username you use to register on bitcointalk.com don't use any combination of those 3 together.

Just block those websites on your PC

On windows:
1: Open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
2: Double-click hosts, and select Notepad
3: Go to the last line
4:Type 127.0.0.1 + website you want to block
e.g.

127.0.0.1 bitcointalk.com
127.0.0.1 bitcointalk.to
127.0.0.1 thebitcointalk.net


On linux
1. open the /etc/hosts file with your text editor and add:
127.0.0.1 bitcointalk.com

I'm not sure whether its worth the price that they would ask, and the .com seems to be trying to be a competitor to Bitcointalk so I'm assuming that they don't like how Bitcointalk is right now. It would be great if this domain name belonged to the real bitcointalk and then theymos could put a forum mirror on it or at least one page with an explanation of how to go to the forum if it is blocked on some territories. Google shows me our forum on top and .com as a 6th result on the bottom of the page.
Bing does the same as DuckDuckGo, no .com on the first page.
Yahoo does the same as Bing.
