1st time posting a question like this so please be gentle :-)

I just got a message that a post in  I made in Bitcoin > Development & Technical Discussion > Wallet software was deleted.

The posted message was:
Code:
Many github accounts have been hacked. For now they are just ransoming the software back to the developers.
This does not mean that there are no other changes to other gits that nobody has noticed yet.

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/vb9v33/github-bitbucket-repositories-ransomware

https://www.pcmag.com/news/368158/hacker-tries-to-ransom-github-code-repositories-for-bitcoin

Double check the github repository before downloading

-Dave

I felt that it was a good heads up for people to give a 2nd look before downloading a wallet.
Was I wrong? No issue if I was, just looking for input.

Thanks,
Dave

No. But he may see this and come here to explain why he deleted it.

No you can not without asking. This is a major flaw. It should say which mod deleted it in the message. Then you could message them directly.  Also mods that are biased get to hide away deleting on topic relevant messages and you can not prove it is them that is doing it because they will never admit it even if you ask in public.

We just noticed our thread was deleted and there was not even a message about it either. Just vanished.

achow101 runs a very tight ship in Bitcoin > Development & Technical Discussion and will delete anything that seems even slightly off topic. He will also lock any threads that degrade to people starting to call each other names. You can pm achow101 directly asking why he deleted the post. He will probably give his rationale to you. He has to me when I have asked. gmaxwell may have deleted your post too; however, achow101 is the most active moderator of that board.

Did you create this in a new thread? Or was it posted in an existing thread? What thread was it in?

I don’t think what you posted would belong in technical discussion. If there is another thread about the subject (I’m not sure one way or another), the duplicate thread should be deleted.

The identity of the moderator isn’t really important. If you have a concern about your post being deleted, you can complain in meta, and you can be told the post was correctly deleted, with an explanation, or if a mistake was made, this can be addressed.

Sometimes, mod deleted post without a note with delete message back to author of deleted posts. Sometimes, mod actually attach a note (mostly in Red) on reasons why posts deleted or merged. I received message with Red note sometimes when mod merged my two posts into one
Your post (shown in OP), looks good, so I am curious what happened. Maybe off-topic reason.

First step you should always take when you encounter such issue is contacting the moderators of the board the post was deleted from. In this case contact gmaxwell and achow101. If you get a negative answer from them then you proceed to creating a thread (as you just did) to get the attention of global moderators stating clearing in OP that you have already contacted board moderators and they weren't the ones that deleted the post (to prevent forum member from giving you that suggestion). You can still DM them with link to this thread to get faster respond too.

I suppose the post was deleted because it's a repeated discussion although it was informative. If it was a thread, such thread won't produce much productive discussion and if it was a reply maybe it got reported as off topics.

If i had to guess, it's because :
1. A bit off-topic
2. Developer would notice if their website/repository breached
3. Verify hash or signature of installer/application starting become common practice

It happens, no need to be offended or worried about it.
I had a post deleted yesterday that I feel was in no way off topic.
A user was suggesting too invest money on reputable exchanges. I felt like he was saying that it is a good practice to also keep your funds there.
I merely stated that it is not a good idea because exchanges have been hacked in the past and you are safer when you are in possession of your own keys. The post got deleted. Not sure why but I am not going to investigate it any further.

Thanks for everybody's input.
Although I have had posts removed here and there before, I could always look back and kind of say, "Well, possibly there was a reason for it." This one, I IMO I could not.

Because ETF said, it's a bit off topic. I really don't think it was and if one person can see it that way I guess others can too.

Not going to worry about it.

Thanks again everyone.

-Dave

It's like that for good reason because mods would be spammed to death with why u remove mah post 24/7. My name is on several sub boards and it's ridiculous the amount of messages I get asking why I deleted their post or banned them because people automatically assume it was me who was responsible when the vast majority of times it wasn't and I have no idea what they're even talking about. If it stated who did what then mods would just be hassled even more.

We just noticed our thread was deleted and there was not even a message about it either. Just vanished.

Who is we? You and your split personality?

The report was for "Wrong section and it is not related to wallet software and crypto."

See, nice simple answer.
Had that popped up in the PM that I got I could have bounced it around in my brain and said "well, yeah I kind of see the point" instead of guessing what was wrong.

On that same note, I still somewhat disagree with that view since it did relate to wallets and how they could be compromised on the actual programming level.

But it is in the end up to the mods.

Thanks,
Dave
